Woke up for sunrise in Purmamarca (forgot the sun needs to clear the mountains first). Wandered the Paseo de los Colorados trail behind town - even in flat light, the path had this dreaminess to it.
So many layers of ancient sediment. I keep finding new hues and tones every time I look - reds, oranges, purples peeking through in the back. What color catches your eye?

Been a while. Feeling inspired to renew a practice of sharing images of our world.

Hornocal, Jujuy — where the Andes unfold in bands of rust and rose. Sometimes the best plan is improvising. While hiking through Quebrada de las Señoritas, soaking in the midday light, I knew the sun was forecast to hide behind clouds in the coming days when I planned to visit the 14 Colors of Hornocal.

Fortunately, I met two new friends (with a car) who invited me to join their afternoon trip to see the colors. We arrived to brilliant sunshine — and shared the joy of an unexpected connection in a remarkable place.

The women of Sumba create the remarkable Hinggi and Lau textiles of this Indonesian island. She is as part of a Collective that weaves the cloth that is deeply tied to the all aspects of the community, such as birth, marriage, death, trade, spiritualism. The myriad of colors and designs is a testament to the beautiful artistry of these women.

Fossas are the largest predator in Madagascar, and found only on the island. Not quite puma, not quite mongoose, they are special. While having fun looking at lemurs overhead, the trackers were becoming animated. Someone yelled ‘Fossa’ and I went running with my camera. I think I was lucky. My guide said this beauty was only the 2nd fossa he’s ever seen.

Super cool to observe. And much more interesting than portrayed as the villain in the cartoon movie. The tail hangs almost one meter from the tree, about the length of the body. They smell, hear and see quite well, so kept a respectable distance while we watched each other.

“Go Back to Basics”
Wise words my yoga teacher often shares. Useful in many situations. Lately, I’ve noticed myself too wrapped up with making the perfect photo, whether finding the most awe-inspiring image or (over)editing the ones on the computer. So, I decided to go back to basics here.

This pic is from a minimalist assignment walking around beautiful Basel, Switzerland. Simple. But, the more I look, the more I notice wonderfully imperfect details. Like the branches tied to the wall for support The cracks and protrusions in the off-white wall. Discoloration along the concrete and bricks. Just a small tree living its life…anything but basic.

The Dancing Trees of Sumba (Indonesia). With the summer solstice, the Sun will be setting earlier and earlier. Which means gorgeous sunsets to enjoy earlier and earlier.

For this shot, we raced against the clock on the back of motorbikes to get to Walakiri Beach. We waded waist deep into the water and set up the tripod, keeping the camera dry. My friend saw a sea snake slither past; I pretended he was imagining. And clicked away as the light dropped below the horizon. I like this photo, but I cherish the entire experience of enjoying nature in a different part of our World.

As if the beauty of the Icelandic Fjords aren’t distracting enough while trying to drive, they go and put up a super cool art installation in the village of Djúpivogur.

Eggin í Gleðivík (The Eggs of Merry Bay) are a tribute to the native birds of eastern Iceland. The artist Sigurður Guðmundsson created these 34 enormous eggs to represent the 34 species of bird that nest within the area.

Definitely the go-to guy when you have a knot in your shoelaces. This Uyghur rope maker plies his trade in the Kashgar Grand Bazaar, the largest in Central Asia. Think of all the rope woven over the past 1000 years in this market. All the farmers, goat herders, and builders who needed. Perhaps Marco Polo picked up some rope during his 1275 visit.
The market continues today…until it might not. I encourage you to read about the plight of the Uyghurs in this region of China.

Interacting with people is my joy of travel. Sometimes years-long friendships emerge, sometimes simply a few moments.
While hiking through her village in the highlands of Northern Vietnam, I was invited to step out of the rain and enjoy a meal with this woman of the Black Hmong tribe, and her family. As is often the situation, the only common language is smiles. Through my trekking guides, we could communicate better, especially once the “happy water” (e.g., rice wine) was served. Unsure if we will ever meet again, but I continue to remember our time.
