Not all proposals look the same... 🌈✨

I met EJ & C through my bestie, and they generously offered to model for one of my workshops. They already had a registered partnership, but EJ had a surprise planned - he wanted to propose to C during their couple shoot.

On my signal, EJ handed C a card asking him to marry him. And of course, he said YES! 🥹🥰

Capitalism wants you to believe that spending more means you value your wedding day (and therefore your relationship) more.

It doesn't.

Your partner will be speechless when they see you, whether you spent thousands on your outfit or you found a bargain buy on eBay.

The experience of hiking to a stunning viewpoint to exchange your vows is the same, whether you're wearing brand new, matching backpacks, or the ones you've used and loved for years.

The joy of hiking up a mountain with a cake and trying to balance it on a rock to cut it is the same whether it's a custom-made cake or a last-minute supermarket purchase.

Watching your first sunrise together as a married couple isn't any more beautiful if you're wearing brand new down jackets.

The most precious gift you can give yourselves for your wedding day is presence.

I've lost a number of potential bookings this year because I refused to compromise my values.

And I stand by each and every decision.

But I do feel like it has highlighted a huge problem in the wedding industry - and that's a lack of integrity.

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen images of couples in locations that they aren't allowed to be in, such as the wrong side of fences, on private property, or on closed trails. When I get requests for certain locations, I feel it's my duty to be transparent about that location BEFORE they have booked me, and to reassure them that I'll help them find a suitable alternative. But I am learning that I'm in the minority.

I won't bullsh*t couples about a location being calm and peaceful if it's not. If they tell me they imagine exchanging private wedding vows in a location that I know is likely to be overcrowded, I'll tell them. I don't care about photographing famous locations. I care about your experience. Many others, it seems, don't.

I never share the locations I've scouted as alternatives to the busy hotspots - for a number of reasons. I'm a hiking guide, and part of my job is assessing the risk and suitability of locations. I've spent hours researching and scouting these places, and I'm not giving away that knowledge for free. I also want to protect fragile nature from being swamped with more people than it can handle.

I feel like the day I'm willing to compromise my ethics is the day I need to retire. Until then, I'll keep doing things my way.

I am so terrible at posting on here these days, as I typically only use Instagram for watching funny rabbit videos when I should be working.

But with so much AI-f**kery and fake accounts everywhere these days, I decided it was time to prove that a real human is behind this account.

I'm Cat. I was born in England, but have lived in the Austrian Alps for just over 15 years now. Even more than photography, I love working as a local hiking guide and bringing people to some of my favourite places to soak in the amazing nature we have here in the Alps.

I rarely share much online these days, as honestly, I feel like we all spend too much time on our devices, and too little time outside in nature or with the people we love.

So yeah, this is me, and maybe I'll remember to show my face on here again in another year 😅

“We decided to elope because a traditional wedding did not fit our vision for our wedding day. We didn’t want to stress about, or be limited by formalities / traditions. We also wanted it to fit our personality and interests.”

S & J love climbing, so the Dolomites was high up on their list of places they dreamed of going climbing together. And they thought it would be the perfect place to also celebrate their elopement, together with their families.

They split the day into two halves, enjoying the morning with a “just us” adventure, and celebrating with family in the afternoon - proving that you don’t need to choose between and elopement and having your favorite people with you. You can 100% do both!

I’ve photographed a number of elopements at Seceda in the past. It’s now one of the Dolomites’ most iconic, and most photographed, landscapes.

It’s also one of the reasons I no longer shoot there.

The landowners closed off this specific viewpoint in 2025. In 2026, timed entry slots and further restrictions are being introduced across the area, because photography content (including mine) has driven it to the point of overcrowding and environmental damage to the landscape. That’s a responsibility I’ve had to sit with.

It also got me thinking about the real-world consequences of the images we create and share, something I explored deeply during a sustainable marketing course with Cambridge University Business School.

Because beyond the physical impact, images silently shape what we believe love should look like.

The gender roles we should conform to.

What we should buy.

How we should look.

Whether our celebration is meaningful enough if no one on the internet sees it…

Whether you’re planning your wedding or you’re a photographer sharing your work, these ideas matter.

Wedding and elopement photography is one of the most powerful forces that shapes the industry, and most of us rarely stop to think about the ripple effects of the images we create, share, and aspire to.

The good news? That same power can be used intentionally for good.

To tell more inclusive love stories.

To make sustainable choices feel aspirational.

To shift the narrative toward what actually matters.

A wonderful belated birthday surprise - this image was selected as one of Best of the Best Engagement Photos of 2026.

For a few years I stopped photographing engagements and proposals, as I simply didn’t have the time. But over the last year, I’ve started bringing them back and love them more than ever before.

Let’s talk about expectations vs reality…

Many of the photos you see on Instagram and online tell a story, but they often don’t tell the whole story.

From shooting in directions that don’t show the crowds, to heavily edited images that remove every single distraction, I feel that photography has moved to a space where we’re promoting the illusion of a reality that simply doesn’t exist.

And honestly, I don’t know how I feel about it. As a photographer, I understand the desire for aesthetically pleasing images. But I also see the sea of perfect photos creating unrealistic expectations for how things actually feel on the day.

I am a believer that the photos should tell the story of your way that documents it as it happened in a way that’s honest and reflects the experience you shared.

The day a walrus changed the course of my business...

Did you know that I used to shoot destination weddings all aross Europe, not just in my home in the Alps?

In 2018 and 2019, I travelled a lot for work. It felt like a real flex to be hired to travel all around and capture destination weddings.

During the pandemic, when everything came to a grinding halt, I had so much time to reflect. One night, we were watching Our Planet on Netflix, and the walrus scene came on. If you've seen it, you'll know.

I've never cried so much. At that moment, something in my changed. On one side, I felt so powerless, but on the other, I knew that I wanted to do what was in my power to minimise my impact on the planet.

I became more interested in sustainability and in learning how to run the most ethical and sustainable business I could. And the first decision I made was an easy one - no more flying for work. Instead, I would become an expert in my home area and learn to share the Alps with people who care as much about protecting it as I do.
