↠ five days of quiet, exactly what I needed ↞

If you need somewhere to slow your mind down and actually rest, this one is for you too.

The only neighbours are the cows, and right now there is a newborn calf out in the field. You wake up to a cowbell and birdsong, nothing else. There are more than enough corners to sit down with a coffee or a book and lose an afternoon. The house sleeps ten, but there were only four of us, so everyone had a room’s worth of quiet to themselves. And yes, your dog is welcome too, there is all the space in the world for them to roam.

It sits up on the alm above Frantschach, and it is only ten to fifteen minutes back down to Wolfsberg when you want the world again.

Would you book a stay like this?

↠ nobody in Kärnten ever talks about Völkermarkt, so I went to see why ↞

Which is strange, because Carinthians will happily talk about everything Carinthia. So I had to check it out for myself. And the moment I spotted a bookstore, I knew the stop was worth it anyway.

I will give you this much: it was quiet. Not a lot going on. But a place does not have to overwhelm you with sights to be worth your time. Pastel facades, ivy spilling over an old doorway, the church tower at the end of an empty lane, a bookshop with postcards out front. I found it quietly pretty, and sometimes that is exactly the point.

Would you make this stop?

↠ one of the warmest lakes in Austria, and I mostly came for the coffee ↞

Klopeiner See in Kärnten. Not my usual kind of lake spot, it is more of a swimmers’ lake, made for bathing and sun umbrellas than for slow walks around the shore. And that is worth knowing before you go: in Kärnten a lot of the prettiest stretches of water sit behind hotels and beach clubs, so wandering the whole way around is not always the point here.

But I found my corner anyway, a coffee by the water, the mountains soft in the haze, a few paddlers drifting past. Sometimes a place does not have to match your usual rhythm to give you one good, quiet morning.

Would you pick the lively lake or the empty one?

↠ Every photo in here has the same thing in it. I bet you will not spot it on the first swipe. ↞

I keep noticing that I am not really drawn to the big views. I am drawn to the small things a place repeats without meaning to.

In St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut it happened again. I walked the same lanes as everyone else, past the same shops and painted facades, but my eye kept catching on one detail. The same quiet shape, over and over, tucked against walls, hanging above doorways, glowing softly even in daylight. Once I saw it I could not unsee it, and suddenly the whole village felt like a series of variations on a single note.

That is how I travel now. Not collecting landmarks, but collecting the little recurring things that give a town its rhythm. Find one, and the place stops being a backdrop and starts feeling like a poem.
So before you scroll on, go back through the photos.

Swipe again and tell me in the comments: what is the one thing every picture has in common?

↠ The challenge on this trip: forget the views, photograph only the details. ↞

A short cruise, a small challenge. No wide landscapes, no obvious postcard shots. Just the details. The tiny things most people never bother to frame.

So I looked down and sideways instead of out. A paisley skirt draped over a metal stool. Sandals and bare feet catching the deck light. An orange bag resting on a tropical shirt like it was posed on purpose. Coiled rope on striped steps, a buoy wrapped in blue line, a bowl of bottle caps glowing gold in the afternoon sun. Nobody’s face, and yet somehow everybody’s whole personality.
This is my favourite way to see a place. The details are where the honesty lives. A view tells you where you were. A detail tells you what it actually felt like to be there.

So, how did I do? Tell me which detail is your favourite.

↠ Austria’s most underrated corner?! ↞

Somewhere between St. Kathrein am Offenegg and Teichalm, the Almenland stopped asking anything of me. Wildflowers along the water, pastures rolling into pine, a church tower holding the whole valley together. The kind of landscape that doesn’t need editing, just attention.

I photographed it anyway, and still felt like I missed most of it.

Have you been to the Almenland yet? Tell me your favorite spot below.

↠ Everyone loves Hallstatt. Can we talk about Bad Goisern instead? ↞

I will be honest. I am Austrian, and not a particularly patriotic one. When I set off for Bad Goisern I half expected it to be everything I quietly poke fun at about my own country.
Instead it got to me.

They kept the old details alive here. The carved wooden balconies, the painted shutters, a little saint tucked into a niche in the wall, a green door opening onto a cobbled courtyard where flowers spill from every windowsill. Nothing is polished for tourists because there is no crowd to polish it for. It is just a village quietly being itself.

And it has everything. It is calm, it is genuinely pretty, and it sits close to all the famous beauty without carrying the weight of the crowds. If I ever moved somewhere else in Austria, I think I would buy a house here.

Maybe that is the whole lesson. The place everyone photographs is not always the place that gets under your skin. Sometimes the one next door, the one nobody is fighting over, is the one you could actually live in.

Tell me the underrated town near a famous one that quietly stole your heart.

↠ What to read in Budapest: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt ↞

The book is not set in Budapest, but Donna Tartt’s novel moves through old antique shops, stolen art, and a world of faded grandeur and quiet grief, the same melancholy beauty you feel walking Budapest’s grand boulevards and crumbling facades. It is long, immersive, and the kind of book you sink into over slow afternoons in a coffee house. A story about beauty, loss, and holding on to the things that survive us. The perfect Budapest read if you love atmospheric, old-world novels with weight to them.

Which book screams Budapest to you?

↠ Some places hold still for centuries, just so you can have your moment in them. ↞

Stift Altenburg sits in the quiet north of the Waldviertel, a Benedictine abbey that has kept the same rhythm since 1144. Above you, Paul Troger painted the ceilings in the 1730s, the library, the church, the emperor’s stair, more than 700 square metres of baroque sky. Below you, the grotesque crypt runs off into the dark with its dance of death frescoes, the only thing of its kind in Austria.

And then, in the middle of all that stillness, an ice cream in the courtyard, the umbrellas, an ordinary summer afternoon. The abbey stays perfectly still. You get to be the moment.

If you want the Waldviertel at its most quietly overwhelming, this is the room to stand in.

↠ I saw the lakes, the mountains, the old towns. This is the photo that stayed with me. ↞

I have spent this trip surrounded by the big, obvious beauty. The lakes you already know, mountains in every direction, storybook old towns, people who are the real, unpolished kind of authentic.

And then, of everything, the one moment that actually stuck is this. A small white dog watching the street from a first floor window, framed by green shutters and a painted horse, on the orange facade of an old Gasthaus in Bad Aussee.

I cannot fully explain it. Spotting a dog in a window makes me disproportionately, almost embarrassingly happy. Something about a creature quietly keeping watch over a whole village, completely unbothered, deeply invested in its own little view. It undoes me every time.

Maybe that is the thing about travel. You go for the grand landscapes and you come home carrying the tiny, silly, human moments instead. The souvenir is never the mountain. It is the dog in the window.

Tell me the smallest, most ridiculous thing that made your whole trip. I need to know I am not alone in this.
