content notice: su***de prevention

today is world su***de prevention day

which gets me thinking about the version of me who almost didn’t get to be here

i’m not going to wrap that in a neat little bow

because it wasn’t neat
and it wasn’t poetic
and it wasn’t solved by one sunrise or one camera or one brave decision

but i am here now

older
softer in some places
angrier in others
still occasionally a complete mess
still carrying a camera
still noticing light on ordinary things

and i am very very glad i stayed

if you are in the part of the story where staying feels impossible

please tell someone

not because everything magically becomes easy

but because you deserve the chance to find out what else your life can become

sometimes i do wonder what exactly a british photographer is doing in austria

apart from mispronouncing things
collecting paperwork
being overconfident about understanding dialect
and carrying a camera everywhere like it explains my entire personality

but somewhere along the way this became home

not in a neat cinematic way

more in a lived-in way

familiar streets
strange light
mountains that still make me shut up for a second
ordinary corners i’ve photographed more times than necessary
and a creative life i did not start building until after 50

so maybe that’s the answer

i’m here noticing things

badly pronouncing them occasionally

and photographing the life i somehow ended up inside
and which i wouldn’t change for the world 🇦🇹

we’re right in the middle of it

sometime midlife reinvention feels hard

the client ghosted you
the perfect reel flopped
the admin depresses you
your to do list grows and grows and grows
and there aren’t enough hours in every day

on days like this
remind yourself why you took the leap

to dare to live your dreams
to escape the 9 to 5 grind

so that you work for yourself
create something you believe in
decide for yourself
and take damn responsibility

which means that giving up is not an option
because success only happens when you persevere

and giving up would mean giving up on yourself

don’t give up

don’t take things personally
don’t accept a no

you’ve got this ♥️

and my final piece of advice? always carry a camera 📷

photography over 50 is a lot more fun when you …

realise there is no photography police
no one to please but yourself
no one to give a f**k if your feed isn’t consistent

the algorithm will survive if you photograph something simply because you like it

you can treat a line of telegraph poles like the celebrity event of the year

take your camera into a field

photograph flowers as much as you DAMN WELL WANT (yes that came from the heart, ex-boyfriend)

make dreamy photos
shoot macros
change your mind
and take mainly portraits

disappear down a completely unnecessary creative rabbit hole

and then spend an afternoon taking 47 photographs of the same mountain

you don’t need to be consistent
you need to be curious

what photography rule are you officially retiring?

august was not one big reinvention

it was client work
early mornings
laptops on tables
walks with my family
wasps, stars, sunflowers and swallows
travels for fun and for business

days when i felt sure
and days when i didn’t

always carrying my camera

this is what building a photography business after 50 looks like for me

not a dramatic before and after
just dozens of small decisions that slowly become a life

and i can’t wait for what september will bring 💛

what did august make you notice?

i’ve been thinking about self perception and aging a lot lately

i don’t want fakery
and i don’t want self neglect either

i want to look like myself
and i want to take care of myself
at the same time

choosing presence over performance
remembering who i am
and where i came from
as a gen x late starter or restarter to photography

photography after 50 has changed something for me

because i’m not only behind the camera

i’m also learning to be seen without performing

midlife reinvention isn’t a glow up
it’s a coming home

learning photography later in life gave me a new role

and starting a photography business over 50 is teaching me to stand by my work

and my face
and my story

if you’ve been thinking about aging too, what’s one thing you’re done pretending about? drop a comment ⤵️

my daughter went to the frequency festival last week
— and it gave me a flashback to the 90s and reading festival in 1996

i found the old photos
and put them next to now

and it’s funny
the details change
but the feeling is familiar

midlife reinvention is not becoming someone new
it’s recognising yourself across time
and letting your life keep moving forward anyway

photography over 50 makes this even sharper
because i’m not just documenting
i’m noticing

did you ever get a moment like this
—where your kid reminds you of your younger self?

roland and i are gen x

i’m from birmingham
roland grew up in vienna

an inner city doesn’t just raise you
it wires you

how you walk
how you look at people
what you notice
what you don’t trust

we tried to build a gen x preset for our photos
not to be trendy

but to feel like home
a little grit
a little concrete
a little honest

midlife reinvention for us isn’t a glow up
it’s coming back to the roots and owning who we are

gen x roll call
where did you grow up?
