before you write off somewhere you’ve already photographed
these were taken twenty minutes apart

this view of a bend in the thaya river and the surrounding countryside is one i could photograph again and again

looking across what was once no man’s land towards czechia
following the river through the woods
watching the light reach different parts of the valley

that march morning was bitingly cold
but looking at these photos makes me want to set the alarm for 4:30 all over again

i want to see what summer does to this view
what autumn brings
what i might find on a morning when the sun never breaks through

twenty minutes gave me these two photos
imagine a year of coming back

is there a place you never get tired of photographing?

i went out to photograph the full moon and came back with a beaver

heard a huge splash by the carp pond on the way back to the car and for once i was in the right place at the right time with the right lens still attached

awful light
ridiculous iso
unexpectedly cooperative beaver

worth it

what’s the best unexpected photo you’ve come home with?

PS yes, my full moon got photobombed by a bunny 🐰

photography can become another way to put pressure on yourself

get out earlier
walk further
find something better
come home with something worth showing

i took these photographs during a fasting retreat in geras

fasting was part of that particular trip
it isn’t a requirement for any of this

the useful part to borrow is a smaller photographic task

look for one texture
try one foreground
notice what’s still there after the shot you missed

and choose an outing that suits the energy you actually have

returning to photography in midlife doesn’t mean every walk needs to prove you’re improving

there’s room to practise
and still give yourself a break

someone called me a narcissist under a reel about why i choose colour in my photographs

they’re allowed to dislike the reel

they’re allowed to disagree with what i said about black and white

but calling names isn’t a useful contribution to the conversation

or indeed any conversation

i have a photo of myself as a child pinned up in my bathroom

it’s to encourage myself to use positive self-talk which i’ll be honest here - i’m not very good at

the theory is that i’m less likely to be critical and negative to baby me than to 52 year old me

there are so many highly critical people out there

they hit you right where it hurts
and bring on that feeling of imposter syndrome

but they know nothing about you
where you have come from
or what it costs you to show up every day

if you’re starting again in midlife, showing your photographs — or your face — online can already feel daunting

here’s what i’d like you (and me) to know

you don’t need to treat every personal insult as expert feedback

someone questioning a photographic choice might give you something worth considering

someone being unkind and unnecessarily spiteful has not automatically earned the same attention

you can delete a comment

you can block an account

you don’t have to leave nastiness underneath your work to prove you can take criticism

putting something into the world takes effort and a bit of bloody nerve ♥️

happily, you and i get to decide which feedback is useful

not to prove how much unpleasantness we can tolerate

your chores can wait, the autumn won’t

when i worked nine to five, i barely saw the autumn, let alone photographed it

I was simply too busy

self-employment certainly hasn’t given me an empty diary either

but photography in midlife has given me a reason to pay attention to the season while it’s actually happening

not plan an elaborate outing

not wait until everything else is finished

if your autumn schedule is full too, take the camera somewhere you’re already going

look for one colour, one detail or one patch of light you might otherwise walk past

a few photographs don’t have to become another big job on the list

there’s a difference between “i don’t want to” and “i’m worried about getting it wrong”

only you know which one is choosing your camera settings

a walk without a brief or a client waiting is a good place to experiment

you might need a refresher
you might surprise yourself

neither requires you to decide whether you’re a “proper photographer” before you begin

and the choice … manual or automatic is 100% yours
start when you’re ready ♥️

using a vintage lens doesn’t make a photograph more meaningful by itself

i used to treat lens flare as proof that i’d pointed the camera the wrong way

with this takumar, the light leaks and the colours shift

i don’t want that look in every photograph, but when it serves the feeling, i keep it

for me, the useful question isn’t only “is this technically perfect?” but “does this feel right for this photograph?”

i don’t think black and white is the problem

the useful question is why i reach for it

because it serves the photograph?
or because it makes me feel safer in it?

photography over 50 is teaching me to notice the difference
