I’ve captured over 200 weddings in the last decade and seen it all. The last slide will surprise you. Who needs to read this?
While planning your wedding it happens more often than not that you try to please everyone. It doesn’t work. You will p**s some people off. You can’t invite everyone, and everyone has an opinion and an ego. But the truth is: if you want it to be special, make it yours. Celebrate with pizza, if that’s your style. Make it a pool party, if that’s what you feel like. It’s your day and you should celebrate it that way. Don’t worry too much.
Your vibe sets the tone. If you go all in and party, your guests will too. I see it again and again on wedding days. For example: you don’t need a first dance, but it helps to get the party going, because everyone else will already be on the dance floor and the band or DJ can build a great transition out of it. Without it, nobody knows whether it’s okay to dance yet. Don’t get too attached to timelines. There’s one fixed time on the day — the food. Everything else is flexible. A few minutes early or late won’t bother anyone.
Create little moments for yourself to look forward to. There’s more to the day than the ceremony. Get your closest people together for the getting ready, give small gifts, a bottle of your favorite drink, little letters for your love in the morning, a song the band has to play — you name it. Often the thing people are really looking forward to is just the relief of having the ceremony speech behind them. But why? You don’t have to give one. (I love it — a lot of emotion to capture — but I didn’t do one at my own wedding.)
This is the one thing that gets completely overlooked, if you ask me. Get to know your photographer and videographer, and especially how they’ll capture your day. There are very different approaches. I like to treat your wedding as your day, not as my photo shoot. That means I won’t direct much. I might tell you where the light is beautiful for putting on your dress, but that’s about it. I try to be a friend and a helping hand, and I’ll bring you water when you need it. The couple shoot in the evening is more of a pause button for you — a moment to talk to your fav
