The AnzenbergerGallery was founded by Regina Maria Anzenberger in 2002 and shows many Austrian and international photographers over five exhibition cycles per year. www.anzenbergergallery.com

After many years of success with the AnzenbergerAgency in the field of editorial photography and a love of the arts, founding a gallery just seemed a natural progression for Regina Maria Anzenberger. The AnzenbergerAgency was established in 1989 and has been representing international photographers in the fields of conceptual and documentary storytelling, and portraiture ever since. Among the agency’s many clients are publications such as The New York Times, National Geographic, Geo, Der Spiegel, Stern, Vogue, Aperture, and Le Monde. www.anzenberger.com

Sachin by Nobuyoshi Araki

After his debut work Sachin won the Taiyo Award in 1964, Nobuyoshi Araki’s photos had been selected for publication in a magazine. Due to the printing methods of the time, they asked he send in the actual negatives, which were then never sent back to him. While in 1994, Araki’s debut work was re-issued as “Sachin” - an “outtake”, based on negatives he had held on to. The original work seemed lost forever.
More than 50 years later, the 2017 photobook Sachin, published by Kawade and designed by Satoshi Machiguchi, features a new selection based on the actual, original photos for which Araki received the Taiyo Award at the very beginning of his career.

In that respect it was totally different from every other house on the street. Charlie was a simple, gentle, man. He loved flowers and the names of flowers. He loved colour and surrounded himself with colour. He loved his wife. Without ever trying or intending to, he showed me that the most important things in life cost nothing at all. In a series of photographs made over eight years, Julian Germain captured the quiet, contemplative existence of an old man living alone in a small house in a city on the south coast of England. Unfettered by the misplaced aspirations of the modern world, Charles Albert Lucian Snelling (Charlie) spent the last years of his life absorbed in his memories of his wife, his children, his love for flowers, music and the quotidian pleasures of the crossword, and his albums of his own photographs. Germain’s photographs of Charlie, his home and the things he owned are a beautiful, gentle portrait of a gentleman in his twilight years.

MUSEUM OF THE REVOLUTION by Guy Tillim

These photographs were made on long walks through the streets of African capitals, including Johannesburg, Durban, Maputo, Beira, Harare, Nairobi, Kigali, Kampala, Addis Ababa, Luanda, Libreville, Accra, Dakar and Dar es Salaam, and the series takes its title from the Museum of the Revolution in Maputo, Mozambique, which is situated on the Avenida 24 Julho. The 24th of July 1875 marked the end of an Anglo-Portuguese conflict for possession of the territory that was decided in favour of Portugal. One hundred years later the name of the avenue remained the same because Mozambique’s independence from Portugal was proclaimed in June 1975 and now the 24th of July is Nationalisation Day.

In the Museum of the Revolution, there is a panoramic painting produced by North Korean artists depicting the liberation of the capital from Portuguese colonial rule. It illustrates the rhetoric of a revolution as the leader and followers parade through the streets and avenues, laid out with grandeur by the colonial powers. These streets, named and renamed, function as silent witnesses to the ebb and flow of political, economic and social shifts of power and become a museum of the many revolutions that have taken place in African countries over the past 65 years.

In Tillim’s photographs, the streets of these African capitals reflect a new reality, distinct from the economic stagnation wrought by socialist policies that usually accompanied African nationalism, the reality of rebuilding and enterprise, and new sets of aspirations imbued with capitalistic values.

The book Painting reveals 16 unpublished colour photographs by Toshio Shibata, a Japanese photographer who is known for his rigorous and meticulous compositions. The representation of intimate yet spectacular landscapes — natural, and especially artificial — are at the core of Shibata’s work. In keeping with the tradition of painting that Shibata studied in his early years in 1968, this book celebrates the abstraction of beauty. It has been designed in a concertina format that can also be turned into a suspended object — just like a kakemono, a Japanese unframed scroll painting made on paper or silk and displayed as a wall hanging.
