I’ve just put the finishing touches to a considerable body of photography for the kind folk at St Louis Nursing Homes. They are a family-run business in their eightieth year.

The brief was broad, including portraiture of the staff and residents, interior and exterior architecture, gardens, activities and services, and rounded it off with some pet photography.

The key staff were inspiring to see in action. They knew everyone by name, which room they were in, the names of their immediate family and most importantly, their health needs.

I was genuinely impressed. They have immaculate purpose-built facilities in great locations run by a caring team.

Photographing a car is up there with the most challenging subjects I have ever shot. Highly reflective, complex curves and a mix of materials from mirror-finished glass and chrome, through to matte black rubber tyres that seem to absorb all of the light.

I love the challenge of photographing a whole car, but shooting details feels like a reward in the process.

I am spoilt with the boldness of the design choices the manufacturers made, particularly when photographing classic and vintage cars. From the elegant to the outrageous.

“Andy’s artworks were the injection of energy our office space needed.” Peter Alderson, owner, IPMB

The right piece of art can transform a space. It’s like having an additional window in your office, only better.

If you are bored with your view, I can remedy that.

Jamerson Whiskey have launched a new range of mixer cans, and I shot point-of-sale images.

The photography was for the head office in Ireland, through Pernod Ricard in Sydney. I was liaising directly with the talented folk at KS Design, who had done a beautiful job on the design for the release.

The brief required a highly refined look and precise post-production colour matching of products that, by necessity, had been created in separate print runs. A high level of problem-solving was required to achieve a meticulous result, which made KS Designs a perfect partner to produce these photographs.

Is it a beautiful photograph, or is it a photograph of something beautiful?

Having a beautiful subject doesn’t automatically equate to a beautiful photograph. The intent required to make a strong photograph is similar regardless of the subject matter.

To make a great photograph of a great subject takes effort. It starts with a setting that eliminates any elements that don’t add to the storytelling, uses lighting that enhances the subject and its relationship with the background, and then works through several variations until the composition is balanced.

A really strong commercial photograph is rarely an accident.

I recently shot a body of images for Greenlife Industry Australia. GIA is a national, not-for-profit, peak body supporting the needs of Australia’s nursery industry. They are in the process of updating their website and advertising material and were looking for a photographer with a botanical bent and experience in commercial horticultural photography.

The shoot took place at Briarwood Farm, a family-run wholesale nursery that is a fourth-generation business with three generations on site. It’s no surprise that it's a refined operation, and with an ever-growing number of orders from around the country, their main problem is keeping up with demand.

Limitations can be a wonderful thing.

Though it may seem counterintuitive, limitations are the parameters for me to clearly identify what I can’t do, which, in effect, solidifies what I can do.

Location photography of any sort is largely about improvising within a set of less-than-ideal circumstances. Regardless of any issues the location presents, my task is to create communicative photographs that are beautifully lit, nicely balanced, and engaging.

Although it’s not always obvious, a strong photograph is always waiting for me; I just have to find it.

The brief for this industrial photo was to get a strong photo of a person welding. The location was overly bright for the long-ish exposure required to show the sparks moving, and the background in any direction was distractingly busy.

I utilised a nearby red screen to try to simplify the composition and tone down the ambient light to help with the exposure. Given that the screen was translucent, it seemed obvious to try using it as the main light source by backlighting it. What was a largely mono-tonal and complicated composition, instantly became consolidated. Full of vivid colours, interesting reflections, and all framing an explosive weld.

The photo I did manage to find, is high in drama, simple to read, and communicative.

Another year, more or less, wrapped up.

I'd like to thank the highly talented pool of people that I have the privilege of working amongst, and look forward to a progressive year in 26.

I produced a very colourful series of garden photographs for the fleet of Jeffries compost trucks. Even after a few years of constant use, they still look great!

I had the great pleasure of spending an afternoon photographing Glenn Malycha, “The Wine Guy”, of WinePro Australia, for an upcoming article in Adelaide’s new free street magazine, Monty.

Glenn is a powerhouse with decades of experience in hospitality and wine promotion across Australia, Asia and Europe.

WinePro works directly with selected family-owned boutique wine and spirit makers in SA, promoting their wares to local restaurants, wine bars, hotels and cafes. WinePro tailors corporate gifts, organises tastings and personalises wine ranges based on Glenn's encyclopaedic knowledge of local makers. He makes semi-regular appearances on SA Today with Jennie Lenman on 5MU.

I hope my portraits share the vitality that Glen presents when he’s engaged with you. Not only is he a local wine expert, but he’s also hugely entertaining.
