Tainan, Taiwan (Sep ‘25) Shennong st in Tainan is one of the best preserved historical streets in Taiwan dating to the mid Qing dynasty. It was one of the most important streets in the city, at a time when Tainan was the commercial and political capital of Taiwan. The street was a home to maritime traders as it led to one of the most important trading canals in the city. The architecture preserved on this street is unique in that little today remains from the Qing dynasty both in Taiwan and in China. Today like most places, it is no longer based around its maritime history but on tourism.

Boudha, Nepal (Dec '24) the Boudha stupa or Boudhanath, is considered one of the most holy sites to Tibetan buddhists. But why is this stupa built outside of Tibet, and which was on the outskirts of Kathmandu until recently, an important site? Its origins are murky, some say it was built around 500CE by one of the Licchavi dynasty kings, others say it was the 700s when a Tamang woman and her family built it with the Tibetan king's permission, and others say King Ashoka built the first in 200 BCE. It is said to house the relics of a past buddha, Kassapa Buddha. However in the 1960s when many Tibetans were exiled, they came and settled in Nepal around the stupa. Today, Kathmandu holds the second largest Tibetan diaspora community largely near the Boudha stupa. If you visit you can experience Tibetan culture, as well as many close cultures like Sherpa, or Tamang peoples.

Chengdu, China (Sep '25) the Sichuan opera or Chuanju 川剧 has its history back to the Tang Dynasty (600-900CE) but possibly back even further to the three kingdoms period (200 CE). Its cultural impact grew with teahouses which were more accessible to the average person, with the relationship between the teahouse and sichuan opera still closely tied. It features acrobatics, humour, fire breathing and perhaps most famously, the face changing. These acts were largely standardised last century, making most of the shows today largely familiar to one another.

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei (Sep '25) The Venice of the east, a city state with 600 years of history on the worlds largest island. The current sultanate, and its family have been in power since its establishment in the 1360s. The area however has long been influential as a trading port with the Hindu Buddhist kingdoms of South East Asia that have been existed for over a 1000 years. In fact, the city itself has over 1000 years of history, with its moniker coming from the floating buildings along the river built as a safe harbour, then a major trading post. It wasn’t until the past few centuries that buildings were built on dry land, for most of its history it grew up as a houses and palaces on stilts on the river. Today it is recognisable by its many golden mosques and buildings.

(May '22) Paris is often thought of as a city filled with historic buildings, however, much of its buildings are actually built around the same time as much of the historic architecture of Australia, USA, Canada and other countries perceived as 'new' or lacking historical architecture. Paris was largely rebuilt starting in the 1850s, but was completed until 1927 following a plan by architect Haussmann. Although Paris retains most of the historic buildings, when these other countries do not, walking around the streets of Paris you will be amongst buildings of similar ages to those in historic districts in these other countries. This also does not include that Paris has many buildings from the medeival period and some from even earlier. Our cities could be like this too with good urban planning.

(Dec' 24) The Yak while similar looking to the cow is actually a different species and not a sub species. Bovines, the family that includes most cow-like animals, have had several independent domestication events. They were domesticated by farmers on the Tibetan plateau possibly up to 10,000 years ago. If that is the case it would have been domesticated around the same time as the cow (which is domesticated from a recently extinct animal called the Auroch). Because yaks have evolved in high altitude locations they have advantages at higher altitudes which other bovines do not. They provide people living at these high altitudes much needed nutrition from their meat and milk which the desert like Tibetan plateau has little of. Thus they are central to every society that has occupied the Tibetan plateau or the Himalayas.

(Apr '25) Wombats are one of Australia's most under rated animals in my opinion. They are like living teddy bears, but potato shaped. There's the things about wombats people know, like their faeces being cube shaped, or that they use their bum for defence, but, did you know they can run 40km/hr? Thats about as fast as Usain Bolt. Granted, they can only do this for up to 50m, this is still remarkable. They also dig multiple burrows across the landscape like little landlords. But these tunnels also act as refuges for animals in bushfires, so they are actually vital to the Australian ecosystem.

(Sep '23) The Acropolis of Athens, the settlement at the centre of Athens for over 2500 years. Most famous for the Parthenon, the ancient temple at its centre, it is much more extensive than the single building. Its history dates back to neolithic times (8000 years ago), with habitation dating to this period. The first permanent structures were erected during the bronze age (3000 years ago) from the time period of the Odyssey. Following the bronze age collapse a new different Greek civilisation appeared during the classical period (2500 years ago), in which an older version of the Parthenon was built. It was destroyed by invading Persians under Xerxes (the same from the movie 300). Following this, under Pericles (2450 years ago) the current Parthenon was built, in addition to the temple of Athena Nike and propylea and erechtheion that we see today. Later Romans, Byzantine and Ottomans have contributed or removed parts of the acropolis. Now the contemporary Greek state is rebuilding back the Parthenon to what it might have looked like two millenia ago.

(Jun' 17) Zhangjiajie 张家界, the mountains that inspired the hallelujah mountains in the movie Avatar, are one of China's greatest natural treasures. Located in Hunan, these mountains formed through very fortunate and rare collections of circumstances. Forming of sandstone, being pushed from below to sea level to above, then formed into mountains, which through tectonic activity formed deep fractures, then through water erosion and gravity slowly formed these columns. These columns are unbelievably tall, most are 200m from top to bottom, but 45 are 300m or higher. Meaning if they were towers, they would be in the top 150 tallest in the world.

(Jan' 25) although associated with China, India and Nepal have a rich history of pagoda building. In fact, the Pagoda was likely invented in Nepal or India sometime before 600CE. The pagoda evolved out of the stupa, of which the earliest examples come from India. Nepali architects are thought to have evolved the stupa concept into the multi-tiered building that we think of for a pagoda. In the 13th century the Nepali architect Araniko was sent to work in the court in the court of the Kublai Khan where he introduced this architectural style to China. From there it spread across East Asia. A testament to the deep cultural ties between East and South Asia.

(Apr '25) Why is Cradle mountain such a unique place? Cradle mountains unique shape, which was saved from being carved by glaciers like the valleys below, was believed to be the highest mountain in Tasmania until 1954. Aside from its distinctive look, it is home to many unique endemic species, like conifers or the Fagus tree which decend from Gondwanan ancestors. It was protected as a reserve early on in 1855, and became a sanctuary in 1922 thanks to the famous Gustav Weindorfer. Today it is one of only two sites in the world to meet 7 of 10 world criteria for UNESCO's world heritage site status, most only meet one to three!
