After 13 years of service, Virgin Australia is preparing to bid farewell to the Airbus A320.

Introduced into the Virgin Australia fleet in 2013 through the formation of Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA), the type has become a familiar sight across Western Australia, supporting both regional and resources-sector operations. With fleet renewal well underway, the final three A320s are expected to retire by mid-June 2026, bringing an end to the airline's Airbus narrowbody era. Their departure marks the close of a significant chapter in Virgin Australia's history as the carrier transitions to newer Boeing 737 and Embraer E190-E2 aircraft.

A couple of afternoon wintery pics in different lighting conditions today. BLOODHOUND 405 - US Navy C-130T, 162311 from VX-30 arriving back into Edinburgh from Woomera in some very nice light. And MC-55A Peregrine - A51-004 on her second flight since arriving and now carrying her RAAF serial after arriving as N567G. She came back from a sortie in some very ordinary conditions for photography, two minutes before it was pouring with rain.

Today was a very special afternoon in pursuit of the hobby at Brisbane Airport.

A series of deliveries, including a Boeing 737-8 MAX, Embraer E290, De Havilland Q400 and Tecnam, made for an enjoyable afternoon of aircraft spotting. The day was then capped off by the arrival of the very special Boeing Freedom Plane from Singapore.

It touched down just in time to be captured in the last golden light of the day. Barely two minutes later, the sun had disappeared below the horizon.

Sometimes everything comes together perfectly—the right aircraft, the right place, and the right light. This was one of those moments. ✈️☀️📸

A Special day at Royal Australian Air Force base Edinburgh today with the delivery of the RAAFs final P-8A Poseidon on the contract delivered. POSEIDON1, A47-014 was flown in by a US crew and ferried Seattle, Honolulu, Nadi to Edinburgh where she was greeted by a water cannon salute after landing. 9 and a half years after A47-001 was delivered the RAAF P-8 fleet is complete, unless they decide to buy more in the future.

To make the afternoon even better was the arrival of US Navy C-130T Hercules, 162311 - callsign VVBH405 FROM VX-30 Bloodhounds arriving in from Richmond. Just a pity she didn't take the duty runway at the time.

Virgin Australia’s recovery since COVID and voluntary administration has become one of the global aviation industry’s great success stories.

Today, the airline welcomed its 150th Boeing 737 since Virgin Blue launched in August 2000 — and fittingly, it’s also the 100th aircraft in the current fleet.

The new Boeing 737-8, named “Lake Centenary,” arrives in a special retro Virgin Blue-inspired livery, linking the airline’s proud beginnings with its exciting future.

From administration in 2020 to a modern 100-aircraft fleet in 2026, Virgin Australia’s turnaround has been nothing short of remarkable.

After an absence of almost three months, Qatar Airways returned to Brisbane today, 17 May 2026, resuming services from Doha with Airbus A350-1041 A7-ANH operating the flight.

The arrival was captured just before sunset in less-than-ideal Queensland weather. Great to see Qatar Airways back in Brisbane.
