"We got the message at about 2am. We had no time. We grabbed the kids, a bag of clothes and ran outside. It was pitch black, very early morning but this time it was different. There were no street lights, no familiar hum of the Lismore CBD.
We fumbled our way down the front steps, with only a phone light to guide us and that's when we felt the water. Before we even reached the bottom of our stairs, we felt water. And it was rising.
Then we heard the screams. People were calling out for family members and neighbours, there was panic everywhere.
We jumped in our car and sped away, uphill as far as we could and as quickly as the evacuation would allow."
