During the closing days of February 2026, One Rail Australia made a rare appearance on the NSW Main Western Railway, using two of its XRN class locomotives to operate a ballast train between Newcastle and Maryvale/ Geurie.

The XRNs are nowadays usually captive to Hunter Valley coal workings, having not run on the Great Western since the Trangie containerised cotton train (1881/ 8182) ceased operations in 2018. One Rail Aus. themselves have not operated at all in this region since 2021, when 2202 and a GWU class operated a railset to/from Bathurst, photos of which were taken by Josh and posted here at the time.

In this shots at Perthville on 20/02 and 23/02, XRN010 and XRN018 are at work on the ballast train, which consisted of ten Brimble Rail ballast wagons and, on 20/02, a ballast cleaner, itself debuting on the GWR.

On Monday the 23rd of February, SRS train 8192 with CM3313,CF4434 and CF4435 crawl through Lloyds road in south bathurst after waiting down the line at signal BT56 to wait for SSR to shunt and depart with their railset.

The crew didn’t make it very far before being shafted in the loop at Bathurst to wait for the WT28 XPT service.

8192 is now the new run of the AFF (Australian Food and Fibre) train from Warren/Auscott to Enfield, this train was previously in the hands of QUBE but has since been taken over by Sydney Rail services.

On January 1st 2026, Pacific National EMD JT26C-2SS loco 8127 leads service 1825 through Marangaroo with 23 NPHH 100t cement wagons bound for Blayney for storage. With the end of the Boral contract 100’s of wagons have been scattered across NSW for both Temporary and Long term storage.

The train is then seen passing through Rydal.

Almost resembles the days of the Kandos Cement train..

On Monday 19/01/2026 I had the high honours of being rostered for an 0200 sign on to run D881 to Goobang Junction to attach to 2837 wagon transfer to Tullamore, it was a fantastic day, once at Tullamore the NPEF wagons were shunted off into the siding road for long term stow and the last of the wagons were NHFF ex coal wagons, these were then ran to Gobodery to long term stow in the loop there and the little critters and I started the crawl home. Facebook won’t allow me to put photos and videos on this post so I will be adding a couple of videos I took in the comments section.

Just would like to add a special note for all that went in pursuit of this transfer, it was good to see you all being sensible on the roads and staying safe trackside, well done all and I can’t wait to see all the wonderful photos and videos from you all
Feel free to send photos of me or my driver to Nic English
