The 100th anniversary of the opening of Maroubra Speedway happened December last year.

The Olympia Speedway was a 1 mile banked concrete bowl built in 1925 on the sandhills of Maroubra & at the time was build to rival the great speedway tracks overseas like Brooklands & Indianapolis.

It made household names out of the driver & riders that competed there & it attracted huge crowds of 70,000 people.

Races were sponsored by the Paramount movie theaters to promote & trophies like the Lucky Devil Cup were named after their their movies.

Despite the banking being too steep to walk up, it was still not enough for the speeds achieved, and four competitors lost their lives going over the top of banking.
The depression & its reputation by media as a "killer track" due to the numerous fatal crashes led to its demise closing in 1927, but reopening a few times in the 1930's for speed records & trials.

By the 1940's the track was crumbling due to poor quality concrete & swampy nature of the area it was built.

In 1947 the government demolished what was left of the track & a housing development was built on the site, with a park in the centre named Coral Sea Park where the infield area once was.
