Photobat Family Portraits, Small and big business branding photographer. Bayside more specifically but travel about all over the place Hello!

I'm Alan, thanks for dropping by to check out my images. I'm originally from Tasmania and now live in Melbourne, Bayside area to be specific. It's not the first time I've lived here, I actually studied photography at RMIT and managed to get myself an honours degree in applied science photography. That meant I could go out into the world and take photos of yucky things like medical specimens, I qui

ckly decided that I would rather work with people on happy things like portraits and wedding. Essentially I love stories, I do love to read a good book and watch a great movie. The story is always the key for me in all my work. When I was studying I would head out every week to see live comedy and realised that my favourite comedians were the story tellers who took you on a journey. I love tagging along on my client's journeys and giving them the memories that they can display in their homes and give to their families. My own journeys have been fantastic, living and exploring Tasmania, moving and growing up in Melbourne, returning to Tasmania and starting and developing a business, heading overseas to investigate cultures and discover places I'd only seen in books, getting to know and build friendships with my clients, meeting and loving my wife, raising and being a fun dad to our fantastic little girl. Some other things that might (or might not) be interesting
I tend to prefer ordering off the all day breakfast menu over the lunch menu
Coffee is my other addiction after photography
If the groom cries at the wedding, I'll be a mess too
I seem to win some awards from time to time, read more about that here
Quite often I get the chef of a restaurant to cook me his/her favourite dish rather than order off the menu
I miss CD's, mixed tapes and real books

The Australian Photographic Prize is entering its last week. I’ve judged 3 categories and also had or have images as finalists in 4 categories. So far four have been judged and four have recieved silver awards!
Including this shot of the Mentone IRB racing team having a bit of a rough landing down at Ocean Grove. My first ever award for a sports photo and it wasn’t my last, stay tuned for the other images I’ll post soon.

Thanks Annabelle, Gabby and Seb…. It may have meant you didn’t do great in that race but you still came away with an award!

It’s taken a few weeks but tinkerbell_and_co ‘s official job title can now be revealed…

I'M BORED...
Yes, winter school holidays are here and I went a bit deep on this one. I was sick of every "what to do" list being the same museum-and-bowling loop, so I went hunting for the stuff families haven't already done to death.

Turns out you can fossick for real shark teeth at Beaumaris Bay, watch thousands of bats lift off at dusk in Kew, or sit in a steaming hot spring while it's freezing out. Plus a stack of rainy-day ideas for when leaving the house is just not happening. Free, cheap and splurgy, all in this post!

Melbourne winter school holidays 2026 sorted: free, cheap and unusual things to do with kids, plus 7 rainy-day-at-home ideas you haven't tried.

Sunday morning, a little shoot with some pups for , as they wanted to feature some of their faves on the clinic walls. Here’s a little preview of what we captured of Martha, she may be small, but she’s full of character and zoomies!
Can’t wait to see which ones of all the pups (more to come) end up on the walls.

So it’s seems that I’ve made it into the top 30 images for the in a few different categories… including what you might expect me to enter Classic Portrait (x2) Family (x2) and also some not so expected categories like Sport (x2) and Commercial (x1).

What does that actually mean? There is another round of live judging coming up where the top 30 images get judged again to decide what their final awards will be.

But hey, after a 3 or so year hiatus from entering awards, it’s nice to jump straight back into the finals!

Note; I tend to always get into the finals, and it’s great, but it’s a rare thing for me to take home the big bickies. I don’t spent a huge amount of time on my entries and typically just put in work that has been delivered to clients. So finals is always a great place to live!

I said I would stop. But too many people have commented, messaged and stopped me on the street and at the beach to say not to stop. So here's Tee's first little beach visit.

Keeping her attention and focus for these snaps was brought to you by lots of treats and patience.

Ok… I promise I’ll stop with the puppy spam soon… Tinkerbell (Tee for short) is being pretty amazing so far, crying at the door when she wants to go to the toilet is pretty good when you are only 10 weeks old!

Big shoutout again to for taking her in and finding her a good foster home, and then for trusting us to be her family

Please welcome to the Photobat family… TINKERBELL!
She’s about to kick off her first day of training today, there is a bit of “not weeing in the workspace” she needs to get a hang of, but I’m sure that won’t take long.

She’s a Rottweiler x Neapolitan Mastiff. She was surrendered with all whole litter mates at 6 weeks and been in a foster home for the last 3, until yesterday when we rescued her.

And yes… I was angling for a oodle…. But sometimes the wife has other ideas!

Slipping into my Judgey Outfit as I head into judging the Australian Photographic Prize . It's not just me; there are photo judge types all over the planet getting their Judge on. My first run-through was pretty impressive- not me, the images I've been seeing. Can't wait to get into doing some live judging next month!

On a side note... from some previously entered images, there is a way to auto-make a tile like this one... I went to update them to add some new stuff, and it didn't quite work, and as the amazing tech team is a bit stretched making sure everything works, I decided to pick this image in dedication to their tireless work. Sammy for the symbolic win!

The Barkology cover vote is hotting up! Not many days left and the votes are pretty close!

Oodles of Oodles. One charity book. Hundreds of licks to the face to me!

Now we need a cover. And after staring at these images for longer than is probably healthy, we've decided to let YOU pick it.

Swipe through the contenders, vote for your favourite and help us send the 2026 Barkology book to print.

Voting closes 5pm on THURSDAY. The winning cover gets revealed at our book launch in early July.

Oh, and everyone who votes can choose to go in the draw to win a $660 Photobat portrait prize. Yes, just for voting.

The Barkology book raises funds for Pets Of The Homeless, supporting people experiencing homelessness to stay with their pets.
