The White Horses of Camargue
Running through the shallow waters of the Camargue, the white horses are as much a part of this landscape as the salt marshes, flamingos and endless skies.
One of the oldest native horse breeds of France, Camargue horses have adapted over generations to this wild wetland environment — hardy, sure-footed and able to live outdoors year-round amongst the marshes and salt plains. Traditionally ridden by the gardians, the horsemen of the Camargue, they are still raised extensively, roaming and breeding in semi-freedom.
Interestingly, they aren’t born white. Camargue foals are born dark and gradually lighten as they mature, eventually developing the beautiful pale grey-white coat for which the breed is known.
Photographing them thundering through the water at sunset was one of those extraordinary moments where the Camargue felt every bit as wild as I had imagined it.
