We did a test shoot today for our upcoming two-day floral and photography workshop, and honestly, neither of us was quite prepared for how special it was going to feel.

We set up inside Nadine’s ivy greenhouse, poppies floating in the light, ivy coming down the walls, incense smoke swirling around, music layered with birds outside the window.

At times we almost forgot we were having our photos taken. We were watching the flowers dance in front of our faces, the pollen catching the light, the whole thing moving like a performance, and we just… disappeared into it.

We’re not creating a workshop where you come to learn a checklist of skills, though you absolutely will. But a two-day creative experience like no other. You’ll slow down, connect with other women, and spend time experimenting creating art with flowers and photography.

Meet Bea… she’s is a professional organiser & decluttering coach based in Canberra. She me through her web designer Alana, and knew straight away I was the right fit. She’d been looking for someone whose style felt warm and natural, and she was ready to try again after her shoot didn’t feel quite right.

We’d never met in person before the day of the shoot. She’d driven three hours from Canberra, had her outfits hanging and ready before I arrived, and greeted me with the warmest, sparkliest energy.

We’d originally planned to shoot at my studio but in the last week switched to this incredible off-grid timber cabin in Tanja, all dark wood panelling and beautiful light, and it really set the scene for a magic shoot.

We moved through the space together, portraits, shots of her working in the kitchen and living room, her knitting by the window, outside amongst the gum trees and on the deck. The shot that’s stayed with me is her sitting cross-legged on the floor, side light catching her face, completely herself.

Bea said afterward she had trouble choosing her favourites because there were so many. For someone who hated photos of herself, that felt so rewarding to hear.

The more I’ve been learning about posting for engagement, the less I posted!

I have folders full of beautiful work, a huge list of what I want to post, that I’m genuinely excited about, but I’ve been letting the ‘how’ get in the way of just doing the work. This is me warming up my posting muscle again!

Two weeks into winter and I’m still thinking about autumn.

There’s a special quality to the light. The angle shifts just enough that everything glows a little differently. The days are still long, the mornings cool but not cold. The grapevine goes from amber to the most wild orange-red, like it’s having one last party before it drops everything.

And the garden in autumn refuses to be just one season. The last of the summer flowers are still going, the autumn things are in full swing, and the lavender is already starting. It all layers on top of itself and builds to this crescendo that makes my chest ache a little… because I never wanted to end!

This year we had tables full of apples and pears coming in from the orchard. Afternoons stewing fruit for the kids. Jars of bottled pears and quinces lining up on the bench. I felt genuinely rich.

I know it’s winter now. But I wanted to sit with it a little longer… this is my love letter to autumn.

You don’t need a lighting kit. You need a window.

I’ve been a photographer for over 20 years. I shoot with studio lights, video lights, a mix of both depending on the job. But when it comes to portraits, I almost always come back to natural window light, and this setup in particular. It’s just so good for skin tones.

Front-lit portraits are my go-to because the light wraps around your face evenly, fills in shadows, and gives your eyes that beautiful, alive quality. No fancy gear, no studio setup. Just you, facing the glass.

In this reel I show you what happens when you move:

Side lit, and suddenly every texture, line, and angle gets pronounced. Great for architecture, not always so kind to faces.

Backlit, and your face goes flat and dark. The camera can’t compete with the light source behind you.

Then back to facing the window, where the light is soft and even because it’s coming through the glass without direct sun behind it.

Save this one for the next time you’re about to take a photo of someone and the light feels off.

Sahra shows up in front of my camera every month for her brand Le Sac.

She also hates it.

Not the work, not the brand - just the vulnerability of being seen. And worrying, will everyone think I’m ’into myself’?!

After almost every shoot we end up laughing. Because pulling poses when you’re just a normal person is bloody uncomfortable.

I’m not immune to this either. I know what it feels like to doubt yourself in front of a lens. To wonder if you look ridiculous. To want to disappear.

But I also know what’s on the other side of doing it anyway.

When you work with like-minded people who are also sensitive you find common ground. The discomfort doesn’t disappear, but it gets lighter. You laugh more. You get the good stuff.

That’s what I want for every woman I work with.

I feel it too. But let’s do it anyway.

Location - We shot this in our garden at home (Bega Valley), which makes me smile… this space we grow food and flowers in is becoming a location for client shoots.

Brenner came to me because of my personal work, not my client portfolio. For any creative, that’s a gift.

She was launching The Conservation Collage Project and knew she needed imagery to support something she felt deeply passionate about. But she was hesitant to show her face. But we’d built up a lot of trust.. so she did it anyway.

We started in her tropical backyard in the Atherton Tablelands and ended the day wading into a glowing creek in Mareeba as the sun dropped below the gum trees.
