Derrinal, near Heathcote in Central Victoria

Sorry, re-doing this because I realised I?d made a mistake.
Though I often take photos of spider webs covered in water drops, this particular photo is of cattle hair caught in the barbed wire. So my original text should say that instead of spider webs.

On the edge of of our lawn in the back yard, Bridgewater, Victoria,Australia

The photo was taken on the10th of January 2024 at 10.30 am, from my Samsung A52 phone.
I was going to mow the lawn and looked down in amazement, had to take the photo, good news is, the lawn was mowed perfectly except the small patch where this was.

Dawn on the Yarra ? Melbourne, Victoria
Photograph by Shayne T Wright

This image was captured from the eastern side of the Lamont Bridge in Melbourne at approximately 5 a.m., looking upstream along the Yarra River. The shot was deliberately planned for that time of morning to avoid foot traffic and river activity, particularly the rowing crews and scullers that regularly move through the area shortly after sunrise.

At the time, I was heavily experimenting with HDR photography and panoramic stitching techniques to push the dynamic range and detail that could be captured in a single scene. The final image is actually constructed from a large number of individual photographs. I shot a panoramic sequence of six frames horizontally and two vertically to cover roughly a 180-degree field of view. Each position was then bracketed across multiple exposure values using the Canon 6D?s automatic exposure bracketing system, resulting in approximately sixty individual exposures in total.

The workflow involved first stitching each exposure set into a panoramic image before combining the bracketed panoramas into a final HDR composite. The completed HDR image was then refined in Lightroom with minor sharpening and tonal adjustments to maintain a natural look while preserving the detail throughout the skyline, reflections, and sky.

The image was captured using a Canon 6D Mark I with a Canon 24?105mm lens mounted on a tripod. Timing proved critical ? approximately thirty seconds after the final frame was taken, rowing crews emerged from beneath the bridge and disturbed the perfectly still water surface that created the mirror-like reflections seen in the final image.

This photograph remains one of my personal favourites, both for the technical challenge involved and for the calm atmosphere captured in a usually busy part of Melbourne.

Near Lake Eppalock

2025 and 2026 have been exceptional for auroras due to intense solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun.

I missed the show in May 2025, but in early October I was in central Victoria and had a few fruitless attempts ? but at least found that Lake Eppalock was a good south-facing vantage point in our area without much light pollution and an open view over the water.
It pays to scout out your location.

We were just about to have dinner when an Aurora group I follow posted that aurora activity was likely an hour or so after sunset. We bolted our food, gathered our gear, and set off, filled with hope and excitement.

I had already done my homework on recommended settings for both cameras and phones, which I put in before leaving, and made sure the batteries were fully charged. I highly recommend such preparation.

When we arrived, there was faint pink to the naked eye due south across the lake. I took photos with my ?real? camera on a tripod: 16-35 lens; settings F2.8; 10?, ISO 1600. The camera picked up a lovely soft pink aurora. After an hour and a half, it clouded over.

We packed up and started driving home - but I kept my eyes peeled. About ten minutes into the drive, I spotted a break in the clouds, with pillars of light that were pinkish to the naked eye. By then I knew what to look for, so I was sure it was the aurora.

I yelled to my husband, ?Pull over!? He pulled over immediately, being used to this command! We both jumped out of the car with our phones and started shooting.

The phones did an incredible job set to a 16:9 aspect ratio; on night mode; 3 second exposure; no flash.

Cameras pick up so much of the incredible colour wavelength of the Auroras - skyfire of pink, red, and magenta for the Australis, usually green for the Borealis.

The Lady went off like a frog in a sock for only about a minute, then clouds closed in again.

No time to unpack the ?real? cameras and set them up on tripods ? but thanks to the phones, we have a visual memory of an event that we will never forget.
