"The Alpen Glow at Buffalo"

A magical morning up at the Cathedral (Tubberlungener / Mount Buffalo) back in June 2025. It was so cold!

We have "The Alpen Glow at Buffalo" as a large float-framed canvas hanging in the front window of the Gallery as part of our Winter Showcase. "Road to Mývatn"

Matt's story: It was a relief to reach the clear skies of Mývatn on this day, as we had been chased across the frozen North-East of Iceland by a st******nt. This road near the Namafjall geothermal area feels like the entry point to Mývatn and a safety blanket as one approaches civilisation. During Winter, these roads are crusted with ice, and as it was in this instance, may be completely obscured by intense snow and low cloud. It wasn't possible to spend too long outside the vehicle, as temperatures were minus 25 degrees Celsius, causing my nose to bleed and then the blood to freeze! It was worth it to see the harsh beauty of this place.

Just a reminder that tonight is the night!

As part of the , Matt and I will be staying back late at the Gallery to welcome visitors and locals alike to view our Winter Showcase. We'll be joining a stack of local businesses who are trading late tonight and we hope you can join in the celebration!

We're open from 10am - 4pm as per normal, and then we'll be open from 4:30pm until 7pm for this special event. (I know some of our posters say 6pm, but there was a bit of a mix-up with the Festival Planning Committee so we're now open til 7pm!)

"Into the Ice"

Matt's story: Flying over Franz Josef glacier in New Zealand before making a landing on the glacier was an incredible experience. I was captivated by the texture and severity of the glacial landscape below, with huge crevices and towering blocks of ice weighing many tons each.

"After Sunset on the Black Sand Beach"

Mieke's story: This photo was taken at the black sand beach of Breiðamerkursandur near Jökulsárlón, Iceland. On this particular evening, around twenty minutes after sunset, it was very dark, but there was a hint of a glow that made the ice on the beach truly shine like diamonds. It was difficult to capture with such low light, but I will never forget how they sparkled in the dark!

Mieke's story: This is the spectacular Aurora Borealis (also known as the "Nordlys" or Northern Lights), dancing over Store Vaggastind and the Lyngenalps in Norway. I have such a vivid memory of taking this photo, as I was staying with my friends Jens and Elisabeth in Spåkenes and this was the view from their home!

"Quietness"

Matt's story: Sjónarhóll was the first place I documented as part of my Abandoned In Iceland series. It has a soulful quietness and the surrounding area is quite bleak in the cold of winter. After landing in Keflavik International Airport and being assaulted by the sudden coldness of my environment - going from Australia's summer to Iceland's winter - I set off driving on the opposite side of the road! Before traveling to the capital Reykjavik, I thought it would be wise to spend some time adjusting to driving on ice in winter tires, so I set off for the first house on my list to photograph. While I was photographing it, a vehicle from far in the distance came down windy roads and parked directly behind my vehicle. I thought perhaps a farmer was curious about what I was doing. Out jumped four fellas with a hearty 'G'Day! How's it going?'. They were from Brisbane, almost the other side of the planet, where I had departed about 43 hours earlier. Travel!

"Sunset Soaring"

Matt's story: Mieke and I were lucky enough to take in this sight while driving between Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables. The late afternoon light was causing the clouds along the peaks to glow, and so we were stopping at every pull-out to further look at the majesty of the mountain formations. In this particular stop, an eagle (or falcon?) was soaring between us and the peaks which completed a stunning view.

"Wallace Awakens"

Matt's story: Mieke often tells people that come into the gallery about me talking to the birds on this early morning at Wallace Hut. It is quite a hard place to get to for this kind of snow, as when the snows start the road is blocked about 8km away, restricting access. On this morning we got through before the road closure and experienced this stunning sight in the cold and quiet. My friendly suggestion to the birds that they should fly through my shot paid off with the raven raising its wings at the perfect moment in between the outstretched branches.
