Riverfire Practice

Flying as Cannon 1 and Cannon 2, the RAAF No. 1 Squadron F/A-18F Super Hornets certainly wowed the spectators watching the practice display ahead of today's Riverfire event.

On Friday, 4 September 2026, the sight and sound of these incredible aircraft flying through Brisbane City was something that simply can't be fully described. As the aircraft roared overhead with the afterburners lit, the ground literally vibrated, even setting off a few car alarms! 😆

Making multiple passes safely through the city, the display showcased not only the impressive capabilities of the aircraft but also the exceptional professionalism, precision, and skill of the aircrew behind them. It is truly a spectacular sight to witness and a reminder of how fortunate we are to have such a world-class capability here in Australia.

Another wonderful day at the Pacific Airshow, here on the beautiful Gold Coast.

Some amazing displays again today and with some cloud gave some great contrast in the images.

Still working hard to get movement in propeller and rotor blades and had more success with the MV22 1/60 shutter speed. A fence helped lol.

Anyway lots more to come over then next few weeks.

A year ago today, I was fortunate to lead a fantastic team in moving the last Qantas Link B717, VH-YQW "The Tassie Devil", into its new home at Aviation Australia.

I don't often talk or post about what I do for a living, but for the past 3½ years I have been working on establishing the Qantas Group Engineering Academy. As part of this initiative, Aviation Australia was donated the last B717 in Australia to help train the next generation of aircraft engineers for Qantas.

This was no mean feat, as can be seen from the pictures. We had to modify the hangar, lay a temporary road surface, remove the F28 (which I'll post about tomorrow), and overcome many other challenges along the way.

I could not have asked for a better group of people to work with.

If there's interest, I'll post a full article about this project in the coming months.
For now, I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Since arriving in the hangar, the aircraft has been used extensively for training, so while she may no longer be flying, she's still working hard.

Arriving into Brisbane Airport on the 31st May 2026, Boeing B737 N836BA "Freedom Plane".

This aircraft is conducting a tour around the US celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the US Independence.

Onboard are original documents including: -

1) Original Engraving of the Declaration of Independence (1823)
2) Articles of Association (1774)
3) George Washington’s, Alexander Hamilton’s, and Aaron Burr’s Oaths of 4) Allegiance (1778)
4) Treaty of Paris (1783)
5) Secret Printing of the Constitution in Draft Form (1787)
6) Tally of Votes Approving the Constitution (1787)
7) Senate Markup of the Bill of Rights (1789)

Departing for Canberra on the 1st June it was an interesting sight to see.

As I was taking these pictures Emirates A380 in its NBA livery was towed past which made for an interesting image.
