Boots on before she’s out of nappies 🤠
Meet Ashby, a 2-year-old cowgirl growing up on a property run entirely by women.
Her mums and her grandmother—where paddocks, horses, and wide skies are part of her everyday.

“Where are you really? It doesn’t take that long to get milk.”
I would send texts like: “I’m just at Coles, grabbing milk, then stopping by the servo. Should be 10 minutes max.”
I thought if I gave all the details, it would stop the questioning.
It didn’t.
He’d still ask — “Where did you go?” “Who did you see?” “why didn’t you answer straight away.”
Eventually, I stopped going slow. I rushed through errands, head down, mentally rehearsing my location like a script.
The pressure wasn’t just about where I was. It was about proving I wasn’t doing anything wrong — and somehow, I always failed the test.
Stark coined the term “coercive control” and argued that the abuse functions like a “prison,” not by constant violence, but through the fear of being constantly watched — what he called “control through omnipresence.”
Victims often begin to self-monitor, pre-emptively adjusting behaviour to avoid conflict, similar to how prisoners behave under surveillance - this is known as the panopticon effect - potential for surveillance can significantly influence behaviour, leading individuals to self-regulate even without constant monitoring. You essentially begin to do the work for the perpetrator.
A trip to get milk shouldn’t leave you anxious, tracked, or defensive. But when you’re in it, you don’t always know it’s abuse.
You just think maybe you’re the problem. Maybe you do talk too much. Share too many details. Take too long.
You’re not the problem.

This is where it began.
With flowers.
They were never just flowers.
At first, they were love. kindness, ‘spoiling his Princess’.
A promise that the shouting, the silence, the small fractures weren’t what I thought they were.
But eventually, flowers stopped meaning “I love you.”
They meant: forget it.
They meant: swallow it.
They meant: I’m still in control — but in a way that looks like care.
Every time they arrived, I was meant to feel grateful.
Grateful that he’d come back to the version of himself I fell for.
But the truth is…
That version never existed.
This is the first image in an ongoing photographic series about coercive control.
Each post will explore the subtle and often invisible stages of abuse — from love bombing to isolation, fear, and eventual escape.
People often ask, “Why didn’t you just leave?”
But leaving isn’t always safe. It’s not always possible.
Sometimes, leaving is the most dangerous part.
This project is for anyone who’s lived it, seen it, questioned it, or never understood it.

Last picture: THe first time I received flowers after abuse. I was away on ex and he called to verbally abuse me and call me a s1ut for adding a male on Facebook. He had flowers sent to base the next day.

Behind every garment lies a tapestry of hands, heritage, and intention.

This week at Practice Studio, we’re honoured to share a glimpse into a quiet yet powerful collaboration between Brisbane-based curator and designer Kaz and the artisans at Takumi Weaver in Mitsuke, Niigata, Japan.

Kaz recently returned from visiting the atelier where the journey of fabric begins—not at the loom, but in the soil. Cotton is grown, harvested, spun into yarn, hand-dyed, carefully prepared, and woven by craftspeople whose skills have been passed down through generations. Each step carries a legacy of slowness and reverence, a deep contrast to the rhythms of fast fashion.

Takumi Weaver doesn’t discard. They regenerate. They reimagine. They keep tradition alive not as nostalgia, but as a living, evolving practice. Their partnership with Kaz is one of mutual respect—for materials, for process, for the unseen labour behind what we wear.

At Practice Studio, the workroom and retail space offers more than clothes—it offers context. It represents emerging Australian designers who create seasonless, small-run garments and objects with care, curiosity, and craft.

Together, we invite you to see fashion not as fleeting, but as a continuation of many quiet labours—woven together across land, time, and spirit.

As the sun sets over the rolling pastures of this Colorado ranch, a quiet tradition unfolds—one that marks the end of a season and the bond between rider and horse.

For generations, seasonal ranch hands have spent months herding cattle, mending fences, and waking before dawn to care for the land. But on their last day, they saddle up their favorite horse for one final ride. At the end of the trail, beneath a lone tree weathered by time, they leave their worn-out boots hanging from its branches—a silent tribute to the dust, sweat, and stories they leave behind.

As Tropical Cyclone Alfred barrels toward us, the community has come together in an incredible show of resilience and care. At the sandbag collection point today, team worked alongside dedicated volunteers to help residents prepare.

Issac, Lou, and Nick have been tirelessly filling and distributing sandbags for the past three days at the Morningside depot with queues forming as early as 4 AM, Issac said. The demand has been relentless, but the energy of the volunteers never wavered. Despite the exhaustion, members of the Greens Party worked with nothing but smiles, offering words of encouragement as people collected their supplies and braced for what’s to
Stay safe, everyone, as we all buckle in for Uncle TC Alfred.
