It was exciting to go to my local store and pick up my first ever magazine published art in Marie Claire.

In December of 2024 I went to spend time with Ornella Byak in Same, Timor-Leste. She showed me around the school, let me sit in on their classes, join them as they visited the local markets to collect fresh food and visit the site of their new campus.

She revealed 92 per cent of students aren’t making it to year ten and they are six years behind curriculum.

Working with 50 volunteers in Australia, her goal is to create a curriculum that can be nationalised across the country. It was special to be able to bring my camera along and capture the incredible work they’re doing.

In 2023 she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Timor Leste by president Jose` Ramos-Horta and will soon be opening a new campus in April.

It is always so special to me to see the impact photography and art can have in sharing incredible people and projects with the world.
