Every single image I deliver to you is shot in RAW. Here's why that matters — and why it makes a real
difference to what ends up in your gallery.

When your camera shoots JPEG it's essentially making decisions for you. It processes the image, applies its own settings for colour and contrast and sharpness, and then throws away the data it doesn't need. You get a finished file — but one with very little room to move if something needs fixing later.

RAW is completely different. It keeps everything the sensor captured — every bit of highlight detail, every bit of shadow, all the colour information. Nothing gets thrown away. It's like the difference between a finishedmpainting and having all the original paint still on the palette.

What that means for your photos:
If the light was tricky — and outdoor natural light always is — I have the flexibility to bring back detail that a JPEG would have lost completely. Dark coats, bright skies, dappled light through trees — RAW handles all of it so much better.

If the colour feels slightly off straight out of camera — and it often does — I can adjust it properly without degrading the image quality at all. It means more editing time, more storage space and more work on my end. But it also means what lands in your gallery is genuinely the best version of every image — not just a good enough version.

Your dog deserves that. 🌿

You don't need a professional camera to get better photos of your dog. Here are a few things that actually make a difference.

Get down to their level. Seriously — this one change alone will transform your photos. Shooting from standing height makes your dog look small and the photo feel flat. Get on your knees, sit on the ground, do whatever it takes to get eye level with them.

Use natural light and ditch the flash. Step outside or move near a window. Phone flash is harsh and unflattering and does nobody any favours — especially dogs with darker coats.

Tap their face on your screen before you shoot. This tells your phone to focus on them specifically. Otherwise it'll just guess and get it wrong half the time.

Use burst mode. Hold the shutter button down and let it fire multiple frames. Dogs move constantly and one good frame out of twenty beats one mediocre frame out of one every single time.
Overcast days are actually your best friend. Soft even light, no harsh shadows, no squinting. Don't wait for sunshine — cloudy days are secretly perfect for dog photos.
Make a weird noise instead of saying their name again. They've heard their name a thousand times today. A squeaky noise, a kissy sound, something completely unexpected — that split second of curiosity is your shot. Take it.

None of this costs anything. Just a little patience and a willingness to sit on the ground. 🌿

Wondering what an actual session with me looks like? Here's how it goes. 🐾 We don't start with the camera. First we just walk — let your dog sniff everything, mark their territory, take it all in. That first few minutes of just letting them be is honestly one of the most important parts of the whole
session.

Once they've settled and found their confidence in the space, that's when we start working. And by working I mean following their lead entirely. If they want to explore, we explore. If they find a stump and claim it as their throne, we photograph the throne moment. If they decide to just sit and watch the world go by, we capture that too.

You're part of it the whole time — I'll ask you to move, call their name, hold a treat at the right moment. It's genuinely a team effort.

Sessions don't end when the clock says so. They end when your dog is done. A tired, over-it dog doesn't give you genuine portraits — so when they've had enough, we wrap up. Simple as that.

Nothing about it should feel like a performance. That's kind of the whole point. 🌿

Meet Venom. 🐾
Two years old, German Shepherd, and genuinely one of the most gorgeous dogs I've had in front of my camera. His owner describes him as an obnoxiously friendly crack head who trains twice a day just to keep the chaos contained — and honestly, you can tell. He was an absolute dream to work with.
He claimed this stump the moment he spotted it. Up he went — ears forward, tongue out, surveying the bush like it was his own personal lookout. And those eyes — that deep amber colour just glowed in this light, every close-up of him turned out stunning. Handsome boy, through and through.
Such a good boy. Thank you Venom and your humans for such a fun afternoon. 🏅

The male Superb Fairy Wren in full breeding plumage is one of the most impossibly vivid birds in Australia — and one of the smallest.
That electric blue crown and cheeks against the warm autumn tones of the forest floor. Getting close enough without disturbing him took time. The 300mm made it possible.
Available as a fine art print through Riptide Prints from $75, shipped worldwide

🏅 DOG OF THE MONTH — Venom

German Shepherd | Brisbane | Two years old and absolutely full of beans

I'm a little biased because Venom is just the best. He trains twice a day to keep the voices in his head under control — his owner's words, not mine — and honestly, you can tell. He was such a good boy for this session, listened to everything, held every pose, did absolutely everything asked of him without a fuss.
The only thing giving him away the entire time? The ball sitting just out of frame that he never once forgot about. 😆
And those eyes — I genuinely wasn't prepared for how stunning that amber colour would come out in natural bush light. Every single close-up of him was something special. Such a handsome, handsome boy.
Venom, this one's staying with me for a while. 🏅

Sessions are now open!
I'm so excited to finally say that Devmatri Photography is now taking bookings for outdoor dog portrait sessions across Brisbane and surrounds.
Dogs have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, so choosing dog photography as my specialty ust felt right. I love everything that comes with it — the muddy paws, the slobbery kisses, the zoomies, the quiet moments, the cuddles, and all the goofy little personalities that make every dog unique.
My sessions are relaxed, nature-led, and built around your dog's pace. No studio lights or pressure to sit perfectly — just beautiful outdoor locations where they can explore, have fun, and be themselves while I capture genuine moments you'll treasure for years.
Session options:
🐾 Mini — $200
🐾 Standard — $320
🐾 Premium — $420

If you've been thinking about having your dog professionally photographed, I'd love to hear from you.

And if you know someone who absolutely adores their dog, I'd really appreciate you sharing this post. Word of mouth means the world to a small local business like mine.

The most common request at a session — "can you get them to look at the camera?" Here's how it actually works.
🐾Treats at lens height.
Not above the camera — that tilts their chin up and makes their eyes look away. Hold the treat right next to the lens so their gaze lines up perfectly with the shot.

🐾Unexpected noises.
Dogs respond to novelty. A squeaker they haven't heard, a weird mouth sound, your best impression of a cat — anything that makes them think "what was that?" That moment of curiosity is the shot.

🐾Timing is everything.
Make the noise, fire immediately. You have maybe one second before they lose interest. Burst mode is your friend.

🐾Let them settle first.
A dog who's still buzzing from the car ride or the new location won't focus on anything. Give them time to explore and calm down before asking for their attention.

🐾Reward every good look.
Dogs learn fast. If looking at the camera equals treat, they figure that out quickly.
The rest is patience. 🌿

A moment of order in the chaos of the bay.

A group of Pied Cormorants perched along the old pylons, each one finding its place while the water shifted endlessly around them.

I photographed this scene during one of those calm Queensland days where everything seemed to pause for just a moment. It's the kind of image that reveals more the longer you sit with it — the rhythm of the birds, the weathered timber, and the contrast between stillness and movement.

"Group of Pied Cormorants" is now available as a fine art print, canvas, or framed artwork for your home or office.
