You’ve finally booked a photoshoot and the pre-photoshoot panic spiral. Equal parts excitement and “why on earth did I agree to this?”

First things first: relax. This is not a performance review. No one is grading your jawline or issuing feedback on your left cheekbone.

A little preparation does help though. Practice a pose in your kitchen like a slightly confused but elegant giraffe, figure out your good side (we all have one so don’t pretend you don’t), and please try your outfit on before the day so you don’t discover it only works if you stand completely still and never breathe or bend.

If your partner is reluctant, don’t panic! Just promise snacks afterwards. This is widely accepted as the most effective motivational strategy!

But most importantly, lower the “perfect family” expectations. Someone will blink, a child will ignore instructions, hair will misbehave. This is normal human behaviour, not a crisis.
Relax, show up, and let the connection do the work.

Perfect is overrated anyway and honestly, it’s a bit boring.

Children and photoshoots are a beautifully chaotic combination of big feelings, sticky fingers, and absolutely no regard for your carefully curated family moments.

The truth is, the magic never lives in perfectly posed photos anyway. It shows up in the wind-blown hair, the grubby knees, the giggles that start because someone said “bum,” and the surprise cuddle around mum’s leg.

Kids aren’t tiny actors hired for your family portrait; they’re busy experiencing the world in real time. When we let them be their wonderfully unpredictable selves, the photos become something much better than perfect; they become real and authentic.

And one day, when those tiny humans are suddenly not so tiny anymore, those slightly chaotic, joy-filled images will feel less like a photoshoot and more like a time capsule of childhood.
