Horses are always talking. You just have to know how to listen.

Not with words, of course.

It’s in the ears that soften when they recognise each other.
The way they choose to stand close.
The quiet pause.
The tiny shift in their expression when someone familiar enters their space.

These two are brothers, and watching them together reminded me of something horse people already know…

Every horse has a story.
But some of the most beautiful stories are found in the relationships we don’t always think to photograph.

The horses they’ve grown up with.
The ones they call to across the paddock.
The quiet companionship.
The bond that exists without needing to be explained.

And that’s what I want to capture.

Not just a pretty photo of your horse.

The personality. The connection. The relationships. The little things you would miss if you weren’t looking closely.

Horse lovers … answer this honestly.

If you could have one photograph of your horse that captured absolutely everything you love about them, what would it need to show?

Their personality?
Their power?
The connection between you?
That one expression that is so them?

Because here’s the thing about photographing horses: two people can photograph the same horse and create two completely different stories.

The difference isn’t always the camera, the location or even whether the horse stands perfectly.

It’s what the photographer sees.

And that’s what I love most about equine photography — finding the details that make your horse, your horse.

Sometimes the most beautiful photographs happen when a horse isn’t trying to give you anything at all.

No performance.
No pose.
No looking at the camera.

Just a quiet moment where everything softens.

I think we sometimes get so focused on capturing the perfect photograph of our horses, ears forward, head up, looking straight at us, that we forget there is so much beauty in the moments when they aren’t performing for us at all.

The curve of their neck.
The softness in their eye.
The weight of their body.
The tiny details that make them who they are.

Those are the photographs I want to create.

Not just a picture of your horse.

A portrait that makes you stop and feel something when you walk past it on your wall.

Because one day, these quiet little moments will be the ones you miss the most. 🤍

The difference between a nice horse photo and a portrait you want on your wall?

It’s usually in the details.

When I’m photographing a horse and rider, I’m watching far more than just the light and composition.

🐴 The ears — forward, relaxed and attentive instantly changes the feeling of the image.

🐴 The reins — keeping them soft and natural helps the relationship between horse and rider feel genuine rather than posed.

🐴 The rider’s position — even small changes in posture, hands and where they’re looking can completely change the photograph.

🐴 The background — I’m looking for clean lines, beautiful light and enough separation so the horse and rider remain the focus.

🐴 The moment — sometimes the best photograph happens in the few seconds between poses. That’s why I’m constantly watching the horse rather than simply giving instructions.

A beautiful equine portrait isn’t just about having a beautiful horse.

It’s about understanding horses, riders, light and timing well enough to bring all four together.

And that’s the part I love.

At 45, I’m stepping into a new chapter. ✨

Not starting over, starting again, with a clearer vision of who I am, what I love, and what I want to create.

After years of photographing families, babies and beautiful milestones, I’ve found a new passion that feels incredibly close to my heart, photographing horses, women and the stories that make us who we are.

There’s something so special about reaching this stage of life and giving yourself permission to follow a new path.

To explore.
To create.
To be curious again.
To build something that feels completely you.

This chapter feels different.

And I have a feeling it’s going to be one of my best yet. 🤍

The finished portrait might look effortless, but there’s a lot happening behind the camera.

For this vintage-inspired equine portrait, I was watching the light, the horse’s position, the background, the expression and the overall composition before taking the shot.

With horses, you can’t simply ask them to “pose” and expect the perfect image.

You have to understand their behaviour, be patient, move with them and recognise the moment when everything comes together.

That’s the difference between simply taking a photo of your horse and creating a portrait you’ll want hanging on your wall for years to come.

The biggest mistake people make when photographing their horse 📸🐴

Getting too close.

It’s so tempting to walk right up to your horse and fill the frame, but using a wide lens from close range can actually distort their proportions.

The part of the horse closest to the camera can appear larger, while the rest of their body can look shorter or out of proportion.

Instead, step back and give your horse a little more space.

You can then use a longer focal length to create a more natural perspective, while still getting that beautiful, powerful presence in the frame.

It’s one of those small changes that can make a huge difference to an equine portrait.

And honestly, when you’ve got a horse this beautiful, you want to photograph them in a way that does them justice. 🤍
