If you want to move with the night.... then check out our 2026 Brisbane Festival program, NIGHT MOVES, exploring what we keep hidden in our darkest corners.

'Shandy' brings a taste of q***r mayhem as our opening night party;

'Choral Cthonics', an exhibition where chanting, murmurs and dones become a force that exceeds the body;

'(In)Sight', an exhibition by Kuweni Dias Mendis and Grant x Wilkes, explores what it means to see and be seen.

And 'The Scramble' by Shaun Johnston, a charged physical duet where exertion, resistance and care collide.

Find out more about each event, and book your ticket now on our website.

Presented in partnership with Brisbane Festival.

ARTS STARTS HERE,
WITH HELP FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU
Young artists need safe places to grow into nationally-respected creative leaders.

Metro Arts can only enable this growth with support from people just like you.

Long before becoming one of Australia’s most respected contemporary performance makers, Natano Fa’anana played, collaborated and found his creative voice at Metro Arts. Today, Natano still brings that same “ratbag” energy back to Metro Arts - as an artist, a community leader, and a member of the Metro Arts board.

This end-of-financial-year, help us develop the next generation of artists as they grow into extraordinary leaders.

god eater by Jag Popham| 1st - 4th July

Devour the divine. Be devoured.

Join us for the premiere of god eater, a phenomenal new dance/performance work. Contemporary Aotearoan (NZ) dance artist Jag Popham presents god eater, a striking solo work that shifts between explosive physical intensity, stark stillness, and uncanny tenderness.

Driven by a primal, pulsing soundscape, god eater warps perceptions of the body and its limits as Jag seemingly bends between human, creature, and something less easily named. Body encased in a shell that slowly mutates and sheds, the work traces an encounter with forces larger than the self, where distinctions between predator and prey, control and surrender, begin to collapse.

START HERE | A new platform for artists.

START HERE is a year-round platform for artists to introduce themselves, their practice, share opportunities and start the conversation about creating new, experimental, boundary pushing work together – with the support to bring it to life.

Moving away from time-intensive ‘call for proposal’ models with fixed deadlines that don’t always align with capacity or funding, this is an ongoing, always-open invitation. Our team regularly reviews submissions, so bring us in early.

Meet the artists undertaking our upcoming SEED FUND Residency and Open Studio.

Tara Pattenden is an artist and creative technologist based in Meanjin (Brisbane), working with tactile electronic instruments, programming, time based media and performance. She is the founder of Cyber Palace and Cyber Bunker, and her research combines wearables with participatory practices to explore how costume-based, audience-worn instruments can enhance engagement and expression during participatory sound works.

Alycia Bennett (aka Anoname) is a multi-disciplinary artist based on Kaurna Land (Adelaide). Their work spans social practice, relational performance, tapestries, installation, sculpture, video and sound. Bennett's practice investigates ideas surrounding commodification of bodies, surveillance, public and private space, and the re-distribution of class and power, informed by autonomy, self-sustaining communities and non-institutional learning.

Join us for the open studio to experience a live showing of new works in progress. Expect something raw, responsive, and still taking shape.

We are excited to announce applications are now open for the Metro Arts 2026 Visual Artists in Residence Program. The program offers dedicated time and space at our MAVA Warehouse to experiment, make and exchange with peers, alongside curatorial and organisational support.

With residencies from 6-12 months in duration, there is no expectation of a finished outcome. We are, however, open to conversations about future exhibitions in our 2027 program with new bodies of work developed during the residency.

Open to contemporary artists, the program includes opportunities for both emerging and established artists. We’re seeking those who are future-focused; reframing, reinventing and reinterpreting form; ambitious, curious and unafraid.

Why is public art important now?

"These days the population is bombarded with ‘content’, but how much of this is really a conscious engagement with culture and how much is just another mode of consumption? Public spaces, and the discourse around them, are a great place to bring some of these tensions and possibilities to the fore as they are physical spaces we all share.

I think art and culture in public spaces is a great way to surprise people and get them thinking at a time they might not have expected."
– Dan Koop
