It was a gorgeous day yesterday for Carnival on Collins at the Cairns Botanic Gardens which marked the final day for the Cairns Festival 2026 and Father's Day. There was an excellent drumming performance by Cairns Taiko at the Flecker Botanic Gardens in the morning who put all the children to work with their own drumming implements, followed by a gig by Lontano. The Tanks Arts Centre Market stalls were teeming with people in costumes, one being our very own Hayley Gillespie and the stall holders were smiling with the welcome crowd😍. A lovely day it was.

A spectacular Jazz Under the Stars || Cairns Festival 2026 event last night at the Cairns Botanic Gardens. One of the last events for the Cairns Festival 2026. I stayed for the first 3 Jazz acts and snapped these shots... What a night it was!

'VOICES by Pulsing Heart'
Cairns Festival | 's newest interactive light installation on the . At first impression all you see are simple panels of light which you have no idea why so many people are attracted to, however at closer inspection, the panels of light are actually round revolving columns. When you spin the columns, just like Eddie Murphy did when he had to pass the mystical challenge in the Buddhist temple to obtain the sacred Ajanti Dagger (in the movie 'The Golden Child'), the speakers situated directly behind the columns emit a chanted hymn. It's quite mesmerising actually, and relaxing. I highly recommend trying it out while you still can, it's quite addictive! My favourite installation for the festival this year.

95% Lunar Eclipse for Aug 2026

There is a 95% partial Lunar Eclipse going right now on but unfortunately it is not going to be visible to us in Australia as the Moon will be completely below the horizon during this event. It's only viewable from America, Europe and Africa. So here's one I snapped in November of 2021. It's such a special event to catch.

Well, last night I just couldn’t help myself… I had to go to the 2026 The Cairns Show It was the last day for it and I got this wild urge to capture some times-lapses of sideshow alley. There sure were some strange folks wandering those alleys,… but I stood right in the middle of the mayhem with people kicking my tripod and knocking me and my backpack around (it wasn't extremely bad :-D but ultimately you don't want to be anywhere near moving things when you're doing time-exposures) and I still managed to snap a few pics worth editing. Overall it was a lovely experience. This year, I also was asked to be a judge for the Cairns Show Photographic exhibition which was a great experience. I got to work with fellow local Photographers and as a thank you I was gifted a show pass. Thank you Richard Foord and The Cairns Show. I had a ball!

A sombre crowd gathered last night at Narrow Tracks Distilling for the opening of 'Loved and Lost — The Freshwater Raintree — In Pictures', an exhibition documenting the community campaign to save a 19-metre, century-old raintree in Freshwater. The tree’s controversial removal brought an end to a campaign lasting more than 10 months, after Cairns Regional Council approved an application that allowed a developer to proceed with a dual-occupancy project on the site. The beautiful documentary photographs by Brian Cassey, Kerry Trapnell and Jon Westaway will remain on display until Sunday, 26 July.
