CCTV is the term most people know.
But technically, many modern systems are better described as VSS, which stands for Video Surveillance System.
CCTV means Closed Circuit Television. That made sense when cameras were wired into a closed system, often viewed on-site through a monitor.
Today, security cameras are doing much more than that.
Modern systems can use IP cameras, digital video, remote access, mobile viewing, analytics, AI detection, cloud storage, alerts and system integrations.
So VSS is a more accurate term because it describes the full system, not just the camera.
Most people will still say CCTV. That’s understandable...
But in the security industry, the terminology is shifting because the technology has already moved on.
