No AI. Real locations. Real photos.

There’s a lot of imagery out there right now that looks real. But thanks to AI, much of it isn’t. That's not the case with my photos. Every photograph is captured the same way it always has. Outdoors, in the landscape, camera ready, waiting for the right light. No artificial scenes. No generated moments. Just real Australian locations, captured as they are - from high country snow gums to the coastline at first light.

Capturing scenes of Australia is not as simple as a ChatGPT prompt. For me, first is the planning and then it's out in the landscape. It might take hours, maybe days. Hiking to the right location, sometimes camping out. Finding the composition that epitomises the true feeling of a location and waiting for the right light. Not some image generated in an offshore data warehouse, but explored, out there, in real Australia.

Spending more time outdoors. The whole reason I got into landscape photography years ago was around an ‘excuse’ to get outdoors more. To this day it’s still remains a core motivation for me.

SOUTHERN OCEAN SENTINELS. Strong winds and rain seemed appropriate conditions to capture these icons of the Great Ocean Road. Facing winds and inclement weather from the Southern Ocean has been a hallmark of the lifespan of these limestone stacks.

Gog and Magog are two prominent limestone stacks on the Great Ocean Road, located offshore from Gibson Steps beach in Port Campbell National Park. They are near the Twelve Apostles, but are distinct formations.

UNACCOMPANIED. Snow gums are all around Jindabyne, wrapping the hills and plains of the Monaro in pale trunks and sculpted branches. While much lower than their nearby brethren located at the higher altitudes in Kosciuszko National Park, they are a key feature of the landscape. While many remnant stands remain extensive, lone trees still tell part of an an older story. They are all survivors from a previous climate, where temperatures were cooler and snow was lower. Since then, they still fight on, having survived land clearing, grazing, frost and fire, and years of change, holding their ground in exposed country where few other trees endure. Each solitary snow gum stands as a marker of the alpine environment itself. Tough, weathered, and quietly persistent.

OPERA HOUSE CURVES. With a limited window of only a few days in Sydney, I was hoping for a colourful sunrise to capture the harbour city. That didn't eventuate, presented instead with grey overcast conditions as I arrived before dawn at the edge of the harbour. But, it was great conditions to capture a more abstract feeling to the iconic Opera House sails. Classic landscape photography, coming away with something different to what I was expecting, because it's all about the light.
