I feel really uncomfortable making this post, but I need to.

So, first I'll start with a question... Which one is a better head shot for me to use, in all those places where head shots are required?
You don't have to give a reason for your choice. Just which one do you think is best to show me, as a photographer.

These are self-portraits.
My partner is a professional photographer, all of my kids have worked as photographers, and I have lots of photographer friends. But, life keeps happening, and I keep using snap shots when a head shot is requested, because the stars never seem to align with someone taking one for me.
My plan was, and is, that I didn't want to retouch my photos. So, I needed to get the lighting right. I needed it to be flattering - an even glow to not highlight my aged face. I set up a big soft box, and a second flash, remotely triggering it all from my phone.
A few times the flash didn't fire, giving me a side light from a window. The opposite of what I was going for with my 'good lighting' as it accentuates the shadows and lines on my skin. But I kinda liked it more. It was more 'me' - less planned, more natural.

I'm a documentary photographer.
I haven't worn make-up in years, and I've never had any fillers or work done, so as much as it makes me super uncomfortable to put myself out there like this, I just wouldn't be true to myself if I didn't.

I did a reel back in April that went sort of viral (I absolutely did not expect it to). It has photos of me from the 90s, and some video of me now. Every day I am still getting comments on it, and while so many are very nice, some of them have been so sh*tty about how old I look. Add to that, there is ageism in the photography industry about no longer being able to relate to younger clients, or not keeping up with industry trends, which has the inner monologue of imposter syndrome working overtime.

So here I am. Super uncomfortable, but f**kit. In this era of manipulating our looks both in real life, and in pictures, and AI just reinventing everything we see, I'll be the small voice that says ageing naturally is ok. There are more important things for me to worry about like getting fitter, stronger, smarter, happier, more creative, and just better at everything.

But yeah, which photo should I use?

Happy "...Nothing a Day on the Beach Wouldn't Fix" Day!

My beautiful Dad would have turned 107 today. Even though it's been a few years since I have listened to his happy voice telling me "never better" when asked how he was, he's still a daily inspiration to me.
"...Nothing a Day on the Beach Wouldn't Fix" was one of his sayings, and definitely something he lived by, body-surfing up until the age of 96, and still having a hit of golf at 98.
Take it as a philosophy.
From the man who tried vegetarianism in the 1940s, never had a big meal at night (loved salad, vegetables, nuts and dried fruit), woke up every morning and squeezed fresh orange juice for the whole family, practiced the Alexander Technique as long as I remember - always had beautiful posture, loved a quick kip (snooze) in the car out the back of his office in the early afternoon, went for a walk after dinner most days, and espoused "everything in moderation".

He was ahead of his time in health, wellness, and the power of positive thinking.

He was also the creator of my Running Under the Sprinkler logo (it's Dad's beautiful penmanship), and my original photographic mentor, too.

So today, I encourage everyone to put a positive spin on things like Dad always did.

Makes me smile.
