Beyond the Bio: Who Are You, Really?
How do you define yourself? By your occupation? Parenting status? Geography? Hi, I’m Nina, a corporate photographer based in Sydney and parent to four young adults.
I sat with this for a moment and realised how markedly limited it is. I am so much more than that.
I’ve only been a parent and photographer for around half my life. In the vibrant years prior, I was a musician, teacher, and award-winning vocalist. A marketing executive in the early days of the IT industry. An entrepreneur making an appearance on Channel Nine’s Money show, and an environmentalist and sustainability champion, before the words were mainstream.
Even now, if I were to define myself solely as a photographer, I would be neglecting my unsung skills like writing, technical savvy, research prowess, and my quiet superpower, simply figuring things out.
Then there are my personal qualities. My resilience in the face of adversity and aptitude for problem-solving. Did you know I smashed the Australian Defence Force aptitude test?
Oh, and how about the skills that are still in progress? My proficiency in art is equal to a second grader, yet these are equally defining.
I’d like to offer that next time you meet someone, use their current LinkedIn headline, or job title as an opportunity to discover more.. Ask, How do you define yourself? What are your redeeming qualities?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
