A lovely acknowledgement to my project ‘Phantom History’ last night Look Award, ‘Across broken landscapes my ancestors roam’ for Documentary Section. The series, in development, captured in France, Morocco, Perth-West Australia, started during 2024 PICA-La Friche Award Residency in Marseille. It speaks to human history, how conflict and the landscape our ancestors roamed...our DNA is embedded in the landscape, in the lands we walk; the air we breathe

The United Nations of Now’ comprises passive and performative threading on a vintage
1930’s United Nations flag. Threading is nearly often a subversive act for me, created passively over many hours. It is a process, a language, an expression and conduit to challenge fixed ideas with a form of open expression with unlimited materials. The passive activation of protest, with tens of long falling threads are symbolically a waterfall of emotions and overflowing tears. ©lucillemartin2024 Phantom Histories

In November after extensive DNA testing we learnt our origins came from an inspiring man- our great grandfather(x5) who arrived in England a slave and over time became one of the signatories in the group of Black African men called ‘ The sons of Africa”, who with scholars from England were the driving abolitionists of slaves from Africa to Freetown, Sierra Leone. So proud of my Great grandfather and the journey my forbearers made to Australia. Yesterday my daughter Maya and I walked on the stones of the church where he and my Grandmother married. I sat on the stone and marked the moment. Coming to terms with the past, with what has happened that shaped our lives, is in many ways the retelling of a story in a way that makes meaning out of the unknown. A story that creatively describes a personal struggle and how we faced it can shift our perspective about our courage and resilience.

Walking in the footsteps of my ancestors is a journey of truth telling, healing and reconciliation in the archaeology of the self.
I am in awe of the evolving history of my ancestors on these lands…many who were forced to bear the most unimaginable suffering, pain and loss.
I feel the intensity of the collective grief, fear, and uncertainty that we all hold from our past. They are from Africa, France and Australia.
