Matt Morgan Photography - captured.by.matt Figured I ought to finally make a page for this stuff, for those of you who aren't big on the old instagram!

Always looking for more people and places to shoot.

Thought I should probably pop by so you all know I'm still alive. Plenty of adventures since I last posted, but haven't really found the time for editing - thanks uni! Here's one that I've been sitting on for the past year or so, from another Somersby expedition with the brother . Hope you're all doing well!

Hi, it's been a while! Figured I was well and truly overdue for a post, especially given the recent trip to Tasmania - many many many pics to get through from that.

This was snapped after I returned down from the incredible climb up Mount Amos, the second highest peak of the Hazards mountain range across the water there. Major bragging rights to my father for being quite comfortably the oldest person climbing the mountain that day - as proud of himself as his legs were sore, I suspect. We may not have gotten quite the sunset we were hoping for that evening, but I'm rather happy with how this shot came out all the same.

I'd been wanting to shoot a sunset/rise up on these rocks ever since I first did the Patonga to Pearl Beach walk - thankfully got a decent enough sky on my first try! Nice to finally have a little break from uni work to get some editing done too. Back into assessments we go!

It's Wednesday! And for purposes of alliteration, that means we post waterfalls. Fairly sure I shot this splendid little cascade the day after a cranky snake had a nibble on my foot. Fun!

It's time for everyone's favourite game: spot the sneaky lizard!

Have been spending some time throughout this gloomy weather revisiting old shots I'd never been satisfied with my edits for. This one's from a little trip I took with my father and brother to Crescent Head and Dorrigo in late 2020. It's one of those images that definitely loses a bit of its oomph when cropped for insta (swipe to see the full-sized shot!), but eh - so be it!

Always super satisfying when you finally get the shot you want! I'd had this composition in mind for some time, but whenever I went to this spot there was either too much or too little water, or just a terrible sunset. At long last: strong enough waves to crash over the rock and provide some foreground flow, but not so strong as to sweep me out to sea (again).

PS: how do some of you guys come up with names for your photos?! That stuff is HARD. 'Sunset Splash', best I've got.

Focus stack of 5 or so shots all at f/6.3, ISO 400 and 0.5 seconds shutter speed.

Happy International Women's Day!
~
For those of you who don't know me, I am something of a big fan of movies. I think it's important that we see greater opportunities for a more diverse range of voices behind the camera. So, for the past few years on International Women's Day I've put together a little list of upcoming films directed by women that I think might be worth checking out! If you're interested in giving it a read, the link is in my bio. We obviously don't have the power to hire female filmmakers ourselves, but we CAN show studios that we're interested in more movies by women by going out and seeing the ones that do get released.

Figured I'd post all this alongside a photo of my cousin, because she's a very cool woman. Endlessly proud of her for starting uni this year. We found this little waterfall just outside our uni campus during a brief bit of sunshine amongst the rains on our first week back.

Edit for Facebook (since I can post the link here unlike on insta: https://letterboxd.com/capturedbymatt/list/international-womens-day-2022-25-features/detail/

Went to Stockton with the specific goal of shooting Tin City for sunset. Arrived at Tin City only to discover my phone had fallen out of my pocket somewhere amongst the dunes. Decided I should probably head back before it got dark to search for my phone. Am still yet to shoot at Tin City :(

Another pic from one of my favourite sunset shoots of last year! Bonus: I was housesitting at the time, and hopping into a spa after standing in the cold winter water was simply sublime.

Perhaps it's just me, but I feel like the fact that Instagram (for many of us the main way we share our art) naturally lends itself more favourably to images in portrait orientation can make it easy to fall into the habit of instantly flipping the camera sideways and lining up vertical compositions the moment you get to a shoot. Hell, the consideration of posting my photos to Instagram has had such an effect on me personally that I've even found myself occasionally thinking "and how will this crop down to 4x5?" when leaning over my tripod hahaha. And that's somewhat of a shame, because there's a world of unique compositional opportunities that come with keeping that camera in landscape orientation, and there's no doubt plenty of potentially great shots I've missed due to my brain simply jumping straight to portrait. Of course, not every photographer's mind is so heavily influenced into developing such habits, and thanks to being constantly awestruck by the work of some of these photographers (such as and ) I've started making a conscious effort to slow down and consider the option of shooting in landscape. It may not suit the gram as well, but should we really care???
