The day started early just outside Lake Kawaguchiko as the morning light crested over Mount Fuji in deep reds and soft hints of color.

Chelsea and Riggs originally started planning a traditional wedding back home, but as costs accumulated, they realised it wasn't feeling like them. So, they traded the big production for cherry blossoms in Japan.

After getting ready at Leaf Studio and sharing a first look with Fuji framed behind them, we took a short taxi ride over to Honcho Street to grab morning coffee at a local café. Having small breaks like that throughout the day made all the difference. Stepping into a quiet cab or sitting down for a quick coffee created natural pauses in the timeline, keeping everything feeling fluid and effortlessly relaxed instead of rushed.

That easy flow carried into every part of the morning. From exploring side alleys and stumbling upon a white horse resting under a sakura tree at a local shrine, to heading down to the North Shore of the lake. Because they had already taken care of their legal paperwork back in America, their vow exchange under the cherry blossoms wasn't a formality. It was just a quiet, emotional moment with zero external pressure.

Even heading to the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway at the end of the day felt easy, complete with a casual stop for Lawson fried chicken and ice cream before taking the cable car to the summit.

Pregnant brides who elope don't hide their baby bump, and Lottie's day in the Yarra Ranges is exactly why.

She and Nathan got married at a cabin tucked into the forest near Olinda, handmade handkerchiefs and vow books set out by the fire, and Lottie was pregnant through all of it. From the very first portrait that morning, we didn't angle around the bump or hide it in fabric, it was just part of the frame the same way her hands or her smile were.

That carried through to the fern forest later, where Lottie walked in among the deep green growth with Nathan and a couple of friends, leeches and all, and the portraits made out there had a quiet power that a posed studio shot never could have given her.

It wasn't a statement. It was just Lottie as she actually was that day, and that's the whole point of an elopement like this.

Don't book a wedding venue if they don't allow your dog, genuinely.

Yoni and Annie's dog Otto was part of their entire wedding day at Old Stone House in Bungendore, from the lawn games before the ceremony right through to the family portraits afterwards, and none of that happens if the venue says no to dogs in the first place.

It's one of those questions that's easy to forget to ask when you're falling in love with a venue's garden or its stone walls, but if your dog is part of your life, they deserve to be part of your day too. This is what I mean when I say the small decisions early on shape the whole feel of your wedding.

They skipped getting ready separately at the Airbnb, and this is what happened instead.

Joey and Alex spent their whole morning together in matching pajamas on the sofa, writing their vows out by hand before either of them even got dressed. No separate rooms, no big reveal, just the two of them helping each other look their best.

That same easy feeling carried through the entire day at Jervis Bay, all the way to the beach at sunset where they shared their personal vows with the ocean as the only audience, the sky turning pink and gold behind them.

It's proof that some of the best moments come from skipping the traditions that don't actually mean anything to you.

I've never seen a venue owner haul a couple onto a hay bale Jeep before, genuinely. Christian and Georgia got married at Gold Creek Station, and the owner Craig went so far beyond just opening the gates that I'm still thinking about it. He'd installed French-draped curtains through the station himself, so our indoor portraits by candlelight and open fire looked like stills from a film.

But the real moment came after family photos, when Craig loaded the two of them onto the back of his own Jeep, hay bale and all, and drove them up to the station's sunset point himself. The light was burning gold behind the hills, and it gave us portraits that simply couldn't happen anywhere else.

Don't skip mulled wine and fires after your Snowy Mountains elopement, genuinely. Eli and Holly's day kept building right through to the very end, sunset at Charlotte Pass giving way to something just as good back at the cabin. They'd spent the afternoon out at Dead Horse Gap and up on the boardwalk at Charlotte Pass, snow gums dusted white and a deep red sunset dropping behind the valley with Blue Lake visible in the distance.

That alone would have made the day, but driving back down, mulled wine was already being made and the fire was going again, friends and family settling back in for the evening. It meant the day didn't just end when the light did, it kept going somewhere warm with the people who mattered most. Wait, stop doing formal vows when bare feet in the sand works, genuinely. Diane and Mody had already handled the legal side of their marriage separately, so this moment at Camel Rock on the South Coast was saved purely for them. They'd spent the day driving down from Canberra, stopping at a favourite bakery and at Bermagui Blue Pool, so by sunset the whole day had already been building toward this. A few close friends sat nearby with camp chairs and a bottle of Canberra wine, and Diane and Mody stood barefoot in the sand among the huge coastal rocks to say their vows to each other. Mody cried through most of it. It's proof that the moment doesn't need to look formal to be the realest part of your whole day. Kristen and Callum hiked three hours through snow to reach a frozen lake, and the actual ceremony almost wasn't the best part of the day. They'd already signed the legal paperwork days earlier, so this moment on the ice was just for the two of them. No guests, no seating chart, no one to perform for. Getting there meant wading through freezing meltwater with their gear held over their heads, the kind of climb you only do because you already know what's waiting on the other side. At Blue Lake, completely frozen and silent, they read their vows to each other,
then pulled out a small portable stove and brewed coffee and tea together in the stillness.

That quiet cup on the ice was the real celebration, not a toast in front of a room full of people.

We were up at 5:00 am near Lake Kawaguchiko as the first light hit Mount Fuji, turning the sky deep red before shifting into a soft morning glow.

Chelsea and Riggs originally started planning a big traditional wedding back home, but as costs piled up, they realized it just wasn't feeling like them. So, they traded the production for cherry blossoms in Japan.

After getting ready at Leaf Studio and doing a first look with Fuji framed right behind them, we grabbed a taxi over to Honcho Street to hunt down a local café. There’s something special about slowing down halfway through your elopement morning, sitting down with a hot coffee, and watching a town wake up before stepping back out into the side alleys for portraits.

That chill pace carried through the entire day. We stumbled upon a white horse resting under a sakura tree at a local shrine, then made our way to the North Shore of the lake. Because they had already done their legal paperwork back in America, their vow exchange under the blooming cherry blossoms wasn't a formality. It was just a quiet, deeply emotional moment with zero external pressure, and plenty of tears.

We finished the day riding the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway to the summit, stopping for a quick celebration of Lawson fried chicken and ice cream while waiting in line.

Never trust a space that relies purely on overhead lighting. Holly and Caique got married at St John's Anglican Church in Reid, and one portrait from that day still means a lot to me. Bright overhead light flattens everything and kills the mood in a room, so we turned off every light inside and worked with just the window light coming through.

That gave us a Rembrandt style look, deep shadow on one side and soft light on the other. One portrait of Holly from that exact moment went on to win runner up for portraits at the International Wedding Photographer of the Year awards.
