Being a full-time landscape photographer isn’t just taking photos in epic places… 📸

In fact, that’s a surprisingly small part of my working life!

Most days you’ll find me in my workshop - mounting prints, framing artwork, processing orders, packing products, managing stock, answering emails, updating the website, marketing… and doing all the other little jobs that come with running a small business.

Because ultimately, running the business is what makes the photography trips possible!

It gives me the flexibility to squeeze in photography whenever I can…. Although it’s true I’ve definitely been sacrificing work a little bit recently to make the most of dry season adventuring!

Would I like to spend more of my working hours out taking photographs? Absolutely! 😂

But I also genuinely love turning those photographs into finished pieces, sending orders out into the world, and seeing where they eventually end up.

So yes, I have a pretty amazing job… it just looks a little different behind the scenes! ❤️

New pieces in the showroom! ❤️

I’ve spent some time in the workshop over the last few days making new frames and unpacking new Acrylic Blocks!

These aren’t the huge statement artworks designed to fill an entire wall… but they’re still beautiful places that mean something to so many of us!

Darwin beaches, Top End waterfalls… special fishing and camping spots. Somewhere you grew up, got married or spent a weekend with family.

That’s one of the things I love about creating smaller, more affordable pieces of my photography. They make beautiful gifts because you’re not just choosing a photograph - you’re choosing to gift a place that has a story attached to it. Keeping the memories alive!

Everything shown here is under $200 - a great option for birthdays, farewells, thank-you gifts, anniversaries or those “I want to give them something genuinely Territory” occasions.

And with hundreds of NT images in my collection, what’s already “in stock” is only the beginning!

The trip might be over… but really, the work from it lasts for months!

A big photography adventure creates a VERY big photography backlog.

Across 29 days in the Kimberley I was photographing with my main camera, flying the drone and taking plenty of iPhone happy snaps along the way.

Then I came home…. Backed everything up. Sorted through thousands of files. Culled them. I’ve started to edit the keepers. Revisit them. Make final adjustments. Very slowly I am turning 29 days of adventures into finished photographs.

It’s a huge job - particularly when I’m also back to running the business, printing, framing, packing orders and, apparently, disappearing off on more photography trips before I’ve got close to finishing the last one!

And somehow… I’m currently only up to Day 4 of the 10-day Purnululu hike!

That’s also why I’ve been enjoying sharing this trip through my newsletter. Rather than jumping straight to a handful of “best” photographs, I’m taking subscribers through the journey one day at a time… with the finished camera and drone images, BTS happy snaps and the stories behind them.

There is SO much more still to come.

I have a lot of people’s dream job.
And yes… I know how lucky I am!

But there was never really a master plan for how to turn landscape photography into a full-time living.

When I started, success looked like having my own gallery. I eventually achieved that goal… and then discovered that actually, it wasn’t for me.

These days, success looks much more like having the freedom to keep creating, getting out on adventures, connecting with people, making beautiful artwork and running a business that allows me to keep doing all of those things.

The business has constantly evolved to align with the life I now want.

Some ideas work. Some don’t. There are great years, difficult months, cash-flow headaches, long days and plenty of figuring things out as I go.

But after 15 years of Louise Denton Photography and 12 years doing it full-time…. I think that’s probably one of the biggest things I’ve learnt:

There isn’t one formula for making a creative business work. You keep learning, adapting and building something that works, for where you are at.

And apparently, sometimes you work 80 hours a week so you don’t have to work 40. 😂

Would you still call it a dream job?

Yes... I'm STILL slowly working my way deeper into the Bungles images!
Eventually I'll make it to Broome... 😝

This image was captured with the drone on evening 3 of our 10-day hike. Our campsite was just below where this image was taken, and from the ground we couldn't see that distant cloud.

And for me, the cloud makes the image!

I know I always ramble on about how much I love clouds, but this is a perfect example of why! The darker background creates a beautiful natural contrast against the section of ochre cliff catching the sunlight.

I suspect that patch of light was also being created by clouds somewhere behind and to the left of me... completely out of sight from the ground. You just don't get this kind of light, depth and contrast from a perfectly clear sky.

There are still so many photographs and stories to come... another seven days of Purnululu, for starters!

This is just one photograph from Day 3. The last Bungles newsletter included somewhere around 30–40 images from that day alone. Including: finished photography from my camera and drone, alongside all the iPhone happy snaps and behind-the-scenes moments from the hike.

Each week, my newsletter subscribers are getting the full journey - finished photographs, hiking stories, BTS snaps and all the little moments that simply don't fit onto social media.

Apparently having a huge backlog of photographs still waiting to be edited isn't enough to stop me going out and creating a few more... 😂

As you're reading this, I'm somewhere off-track in the south of Litchfield National Park... even though I already have months of work to go through the images I already have.

I just can't help myself! If the opportunity presents itself - I do my best to get out there!

Getting out bush exploring - it's what I live for. Carrying everything I need on my back. Seeing what the landscape is doing at this particular moment in the season... This walk is exploratory (I've never been here before, and neither have any of our group!). Hopefully I come home with photographs that capture a little piece of the adventure.

One of the things I love most about the Top End is how dramatically it changes throughout the year. I want my photography to show the details of this. Not just the iconic places at the iconic times, but the landscapes through every season.

So yes... I'm adding a few more files to the backlog!

This is why I still can’t get enough of the Top End!

I like to think I’ve seen a lot of it… but somehow there’s always more! Each adventure reminds me how much there is to experience.

This is a look at my 4 day trip from last week - with darwinbushwalkingclub and led by Sebastien of NoTraces Bushwalking

Hidden waterfalls. Pristine swimming holes. Incredible campsites. Beautiful sunsets. And a LOT of swimming and pack floating! Such a unique experience.

After all these years, the Top End still has surprises!

Did I ever mention how much I love it here?! 🤪❤️

Choosing the perfect finish!

Every photograph responds differently to various printing and framing methods. Some images come to life on Aluminium HD, others suit the softer finish of canvas, while many look timeless as a traditionally framed print.

With so many options available, a range of sizes, and hundreds of images to choose from, knowing what to choose can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. I get it!

After printing and framing my work for over 15 years, I've developed a good feel for which presentation styles really bring out the best in each photograph. So, I've come up with a new idea that I'll be gradually rolling out across my website.

You'll start to see **Louise's Recommendation** on some product images, like pictured here in this post.

I'll share my favourite presentation style and explain why I think it suits that particular image. My hope is that it takes a little of the guesswork out of choosing artwork for your home or workplace.
