Making the most of the young grebes on the Poonawatta dam. The chicks constantly harass the parent for food. The adult grebe dives down finding small water insects or shrimp which it passes to the chick. With quiet patience, the feeding process circulates the dam perimeter and it is simply a matter of sitting still until the grebes approach close enough to capture the image.

Grebe and chick on the Poonawatta dam.
For most of this season we have seen one lone male grebe on the dam. Then four chicks appeared with their mum. The parent dives down catching small water critters then surfaces to an excited chick waiting to be fed.

This time of year we have a flock of 50 to 60 Sulphur Crested Cockatoos descend on us. Their screeching calls are our alarm clock in the morning, and signal the end of the day each evening. For a month or so they test the walnuts on our old trees until they are ripe enough to eat, then it is a flurry of activity over a few days until all are consumed.

The spring rains have filled creeks, waterholes and dams, and the insect life has boomed.
We haven't seen dragonflies on the dam for years, but this year they are everywhere.
I threw this stick out for the dogs to fetch, and the mating pairs immediately descended onto it.

Celebrating World Elephant Day. Sheldrick Wildlife Trust does amazing work in saving and protecting orphaned elephants in East Africa. This shot was taken some years ago, as the orphans excitedly stampede back to their yards for their evening drink.

It was really nice to spend a couple of hours watching Crested Terns catching fish and feeding their young. South Australia's Coorong is a spectacular place for birding.
