A moment for the boys.

Every now and then a couple asks if we can skip groom prep. The guys don’t really need photos, or they’re too awkward and don’t want to be in front of a camera. The answer’s always the same.

You won’t be in the room when he’s putting his suit on.

You won’t see him with his closest mates, drink in hand, laughing at something stupid.

You won’t hear the way blokes take the p**s out of each other when no one else is watching.

You won’t notice him quietly hiding his nerves from the boys.

He’ll try to tell you about it later.

He won’t get it right.

Groom prep is half your wedding day. It deserves a photographer in the room.

The biggest mistake on a wedding timeline isn’t where you put your portraits. Most wedding timelines are built like itineraries. Fifteen-minute blocks. Cocktail hour starts at 4. Cake cut at 8:15.

You spend the whole day chasing a spreadsheet someone built for you in a Google Doc. The best days don’t run like that. They have two anchors. Ceremony. Dinner.

Everything in between gets to breathe. Ten minutes after you finish your family photos (these normally take place after your ceremony) slip away. No guests. No camera. Just the two of you.

That’s the part you’ll remember in five years, and it’s the part that disappears first when the run sheet gets too tight. Save this. Send it to your partner before you build the run sheet.

P.S. This is just an example of a time to have this moment. There are plenty of other opportunities throughout your day to have 10 minutes with just the two of you. Another good one is when you’ve finished your bridal portraits, everyone is getting seated and ready for you to enter your reception. This moment right here is another easy window to say bye to everyone and the cameras and have 10 minutes to yourselves.

A five-minute drive from Jackson Ranch, and somehow it feels like the edge of the world.
Most couples end up here at some point on their wedding day. I don’t think anyone plans it when they are booking the Ranch initially. But it becomes a 10 minute little getaway to have some time with just the two of you and it just becomes part of the day.
