Middle Ground
In a world that often feels divided by conflict and overwhelmed by global crises, finding a place where we can all stand together has never been more urgent. For Sam Hilton, founder of the Spirited Foundation, that place isn’t just a metaphor... it’s the ocean.
Earlier today at Terrigal Haven, as the community gathered for the Paddle Out 2025 event, Sam spoke of a "middle way", a space where humanity can pause, breathe, and find a rhythm that allows everyone to thrive.
"Humanity has never needed that more than it needs it now," Sam explained. With the world facing complex challenges from climate change to global conflict, he believes the path forward isn't through division, but through connection. The event was about creating a "middle ground" where we can work together as a community to hold space for each other.
The Philosophy of the Middle Way
For Sam, this "middle ground" is about creating a fairer world. It is the understanding that when children and young people thrive, the entire community benefits.
"When children and young people thrive in our communities, it makes better communities. This just makes sense," Sam said.
The event served as a starting point for difficult but necessary conversations regarding family and domestic violence. By gathering in the ocean... one of the most powerful forces on the planet... the community created a "middle way" for people to succeed in business and family life without leaving the most vulnerable behind.
A Tsunami of Change
While the paddlers have returned to shore, the impact of today’s event continues to ripple out. Sam described the initiative as "flipping the pyramid on its head" to create a tsunami of change.
It wasn't just about Terrigal; it was a global moment. From Nigeria to Hawaii, Santa Cruz to shores all around Australia, young people paddled out in unison. This collective action gave a voice to those who often feel silenced, showing them that they are part of something bigger than themselves.
Today was not just a day at the beach; it was a demonstration of unity. It was a step toward a world where we stop ignoring the uncomfortable realities and instead face them with the support of a community at our back. As Sam noted, this was the starting point to building a world where hope and healing can truly take root.
