Melt yourself into me, in the name of chrysalis.
More of this coming soon, do what you love - personal work is where the heart expands.

Leisure

Two women traverse around one another in a motel; a guest retiring to leisure, and a housekeeper resisting it.

The film was an investigation into , which consists often of wide, long takes, little to no dialogue, and ritualistic elements (I'll do a slow cinema deep dive another day!).

Leisure frees itself from dramatic narrative; long takes of insignificant details and events become the films’ operative subjects, in which the surplus of reality complemented with the accrual of duration, offers a mundane dramaturgy, if you will. Leisure relishes in the literal depiction of routine (non)events of the leisure body and the labor body engaging in their respective quotidian circumstances, such as relaxing in the hot tub or cleaning the toilet.

Here are some grabs from a render test for an upcoming video project I’m so excited about.
In it we have stretched time, a moment, a feeling, and elongated it across the frame. The result is something quite beautiful. I’ve always been interested in the time image and the “feeling” and phenomenology of time in film, and how it influences our state and immersion into that image. The experimental films of James Benning and Sharon Lockhart were my initial intro to the idea of wide and durational cinema, followed by Lav Diaz and other greats.
But this isn’t that at all - this is more of a digital rendering and visual from that seed.
Can’t wait to share the actual project with you. Rendering will take about 200 hours, powered through - hopefully there are no power outages out here in the bush!

Excerpt from MICHIKO music video. This editing technique was inspired by slit scan photography which I went super deep into it after seeing time based artist Daniel Crook’s incredible work. I’m keen to jump back into this, though the render bender I have to go on in After Effects is pretty painstaking.

I loved watching the dappled shadows change and reach on the Spanish plastered walls. Such a bright, light filled and airy space.

The furnishings have been considered with comfort and beauty in mind - it’s truly a calming space, topped off with a deep outdoor stone bath. ✨
