We were chasing mackerel a while back when we noticed some fish traps cutting across the surface. Once we got closer we noticed it was a huge Loggerhead Turtle, at a guess around 100kgs, completely tangled up in the rope of the trap. Another boater came over after they’d attempted to free it also, after they’d reported it to Marine Rescue who told them to ring Orrca, who told them to ring NPWS….the full run around.
Each dive it would take it would somehow half-hitch more of the slack in the rope around its neck until after about 30 minutes the rope was almost vertical up and down and pretty much at its limit to get air. I dunno how much longer it had in it coz we could see it slowly becoming less and less mobile the longer it took.
Nearly had my hand crushed at one stage when it tried to retract its neck in its shell but eventually we got it free after a stressful 30 minutes, and however long it was tangled before either of our boats realised.
I feel like by the end it realised we weren’t a threat and almost swam to us knowing it was cooked otherwise.
We marked the spot, gave the rope and GPS to the local co-op who let the commercial fisho know what we’d done.
Convinced we’d get good karma from it we ended up 🍩 on the mackerel for the season 😂
