One of the beautiful parts of this work is to accompany a family through change. From pregnancy to first baby. Or from little family to expansion. From bump to baby. Or from family of four to a wedding (the cutest!).

Because I was allowed into their life, to get a little peak, to witness something meaningful: change, a new chapter, a beginning or a celebration of love or life, there remains a connection to these couples / families.

Sometimes I see their stories come up on Instagram: that newborn baby all cubby and sparkly big eyed now; that mama pregnant again; family life continuing all the time… and my heart opens. I love seeing snippets of their life, having been there for a moment in time myself with them. It’s a beautiful thing.

Autumn is such a gorgeous time for a photos session. We are just spoilt for choice in the Macedon Ranges. Whether amongst the oak trees in Gisborne, the multi coloured trees in Daylesford around the lake or Malmsbury botanical gardens just to name a few, there are just so many wonderful places to catch up and explore and play.

I’ve had this in my stories previously. And even though this was a quick photo, I feel it deserves a spot on “the grid”....

Every shoot has its own little rhythm.

At first there’s usually a bit of holding back. Everyone is finding their feet, working out what to do with themselves, feeling the camera there.

Then, slowly, things start to loosen.

The kids wander a little closer. The laughs come more easily. People stop trying so hard and start becoming themselves again.

This was that moment with her… a little more open, a little more curious, letting me see who she is. I really like this shot!

There’s something very tender about those early days post birth. A new baby. A mama finding her rhythm again. A little one figuring out where he fits now….

And how is it possible that this little boy is now a brother, and feels so big all of a sudden next to this tiny baby boy?! Impossible.

I love photographing families in the middle of it all. Cups of tea going cold, little hands reaching with a not yet calibrated strength, climbing up to see the baby, light spilling through the window.

The ordinary moments that quietly become the memories you ache to hold onto later.

There was a lot of tenderness in this moment. I carefully set up a little nest for big brother to hold his 6 day old baby brother. Confident, we could make this happen. All set up, this little man realised he was holding his little brother *alone*, no help from Mum and Dad!!! Just him!

The sweetest little magic unfolding. Disbelief, realisation, delight, intrigue, then pure awe and tenderness. All following on from each other.

I totally get it. Being in front of a camera is super awkward. There’s always a little bit of self-awareness, figuring out where to put your hands, what to do, where to look?

Then something softens, the laughter comes…
and people forget I’m there for a moment or two. And that’s the moment I try and bottle up for you in a photograph, the one that actually captures you. Unguarded genuine laughs, little looks, pure joy.

Let’s spend some time together, let’s keep some of those moments!

Had the most wonderful session in Gisborne the other day. The oaks still had plenty of green but the sun was already so much softer, it being autumn…

We had a lovely little walk around the Sankey Reserve area and did plenty of goofing around.

There was so much ease and enjoyment, it was wonderful! And look at this cheeky young lad… there will be a point in time when he’ll be too big and heavy to be lifted by his Mama, and then these photos will carry all the more meaning… “oh I remember those sweet hugs and cuddles, when I could still scoop him up in one swell motion”. It will be almost tangible still, almost…..

This bloke happily entertained our curiosity a little while back, when we walked up to him asking what he had caught, and how, and why! Fun to get chatting to random people sometimes. Kids bridge that gap quite beautifully when it comes to talking to people you otherwise may not!?
