Dedicating these photos to plant ID teachers. For me a man we nicknamed Sinner is who I think of. Patient, passionate, inspiring and caring, he helped me learn more plant ID and my life.

You ever just assume it’s ‘that’ locally common species, but eventually realise you know less than you thought? Here’s another example for me☝🏻 I jumped at Zieria smithii (now i’m like how bro? but yeah hindsight is a gem)

Zieria laxiflora | Wallum Zieria

Zieria’s are a pretty awesome genus. With the trifoliate leaflets and often nice smelling leaves when crushed, I enjoy seeing them as a sign of a healthy midstorey. What do you think? A based indicator?

Is it just me or is keying out the Hibbertia genus easy on the surface and hard in the trenches? 🧐

From an initial look at the genera’s key ID features you’d think counting the sepals and carpels is an easy way to figure out species. Then the key turns to the leaves and the cross over is so challenging that I spend an hour looking at different leaves. 🍂

As a Heath fanatic, Hibbertia’s have always been one of the biggest challenges, anyone got any tips?

Hibbertia crinita | No common name

“Right place at the right time certainly applies to sighting (and smelling!) the beautiful flower of the Small bolwarra (Eupomatia bennettii). These flowers are only open for 1 to 2 days which makes it a race against time for the Genus’s specialist, obligate pollinator – a weevil in the Genus Elleschodes to locate and pollinate flowers. This is where the strong scent certainly comes into its own. The flowers themselves open sequentially – first the receptive female parts, followed by the pollen bearing male stamens. Small bolwarra are primitive shrubs that belong in the ancient Family Eupomatiaceae. This contains just the single genus (with only 3 species) which separated from its closest relative some 80-120 million years ago.“ - Land for Wildlife South East Queensland.

😅 They were some pretty cool plants though…

We hiked up to see some of the last remnant forest in Sicily, taking about 4 hours each way. We knew something was wrong, but a false negative and doctor had misguided us to thinking it wasn’t pregnancy. So Graysie soldiered on (with some…. strong encouragement) until we saw what we came for. The next day, Mt Enta. But from the South- east side looking for threatened trees that grow on an active volcano. Found them! This track on Mt Enta is called - Serre delle Concazze trail. trust me go left when you reach the fork…

Dad life takes priority, but I still love learning about plants and their roles in ecosystems. This one comes from my favourite country…

Thanks for sticking around and welcome to those who have recently started following. Keen to keep getting it out there just how amazing native plants are!

doom scroll to learn more 👉🏼 This is a Eucalyptus microcorys- Tallowwood. 🪾An important Koala food 🐨 and part of a never logged forest in South East Queensland. Go for a walk in Lamington National Park (Binna Burra section) on Dave’s creek circuit to find these giants mixed in with the biggest Allocasuarina torulosas(She-oak) you will ever see. Incredibly special 🌳🪾
