8 days into trying to understand how to effectively manage my ADHD, and the biggest thing I’ve learnt so far is that understanding the behaviour changes everything.

I’m starting to understand why I procrastinate. Why I reach for distractions when I’m overwhelmed. Why I can know exactly what I need to do and still find myself doing something completely different.

A lot of these behaviours have been reinforced over years because they offer an easier route to immediate relief, reward or dopamine.

The biggest change I’m working on isn’t trying to stop these behaviours from showing up.

It’s catching them when they do.

Recognising what’s happening, understanding why my brain wants to take that route, and consciously choosing a different behaviour that actually moves me forward, rather than the one that gives me instant gratification.

I’m only 8 days into understanding this properly, so I certainly don’t have ADHD figured out.

But understanding the “why” behind my behaviour is already making it much easier to change the “what”.
