The Omega Centauri star cluster.
Globular clusters are enormous spheres of stars tightly bound together by each other's gravity. They lie on the outer edges of the Milky way and are among the oldest objects in the galaxy.. this one is thought to be around 12 Billion years old!!
Omega Centauri is also the largest globular cluster in the galaxy, so large it is believed to have once been the core of another galaxy which was swallowed up by the Milky way a long time ago.

The Carina Nebula.

This huge cloud of space dust is actively forming new stars. It is also home to the enormous star 'Eta Carinae' which is on its deathbed. It is predicted that Eta Carinae could turn supernova any time, when it does explode it would be visible in the daytime- the dark keyhole shape just above centre is fallout from its last eruption.
Shining bright from about 8,500 lightyears away this really is the jewel of the southern sky.

For those that may be interested: this photo is 2 hours of 2 minute exposures, shot with Canon 1100d attached to skywatcher 80ED at 600mm focal length, tracked on a HEQ5 equatorial mount.

Capturing an entire galaxy was a huge milestone and marked the moment I fell into the astrophotography event horizon.
