Natventuring Photography A collection of photographs accumulated through the eyes of a zoologist adventuring through life.

My photography encapsulates my pursuit to explore and document the natural world and all its wonder. As a passionate zoologist and conservationist it is my strong belief that nature is best experienced visually, through our eyes and our lenses. Some of this journey also occurs in various zoos, wildlife parks, sanctuaries and reserves, vital organizations which allow us to maintain our pursuit to conserve all the diversity contained in our natural world.

A pair of little red flying foxes (Pteropus scapulatus) hanging out in their day time roost. This species has a rather quirky way of collecting their drinking water, having been documented skimming the surface of streams and rivers and subsequently licking the acquired moisture from their fur.

Bonus post for world crocodile day. Barratt recently ventured too far into the territory of another alpha male dubbed Lumpy. The ensuing contest resulted in the loss of the end of Barratt’s tail. Crocodiles have an incredibly effective immune system which allows them to heal from serious wounds, often without infection, after territorial disputes.

Happy world crocodile day from this big boy dubbed Barratt by the local boaties. He is one of a number of larger “alpha male” salt water crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) that control a patch of territory along the Daintree River, part of the UNESCO World Heritage listed wet tropic region of Queensland.

Though originally introduced to New Zealand in 1864 as an ornamental water fowl, recent evidence of natural migrations have led to the black swan (Cygnus atratus) being considered a native species. Despite this migratory pattern much of the extant population within New Zealand still appears to have descended from the original deliberate introductions of the species.

Finally found some time for editing!!!!!

Cape petrel (Daption capense), also widely referred to as the pintado petrel, is the only member of the Daption genus. The common name of pintado petrel is derived from Spanish, wherein pintado means painted, a reference to the birds remarkable black and white plumage.
