Aunty Cheryl Mackay comes from Marble Bar, a community located in Western Australia ✨

Aunty Cheryl comes from the Palyku people of the Nyiyaparli language group. Aunty’s totem is the Puthukirnha Tarn Tarn in English it’s the Emu dreaming bird 🖤

When I met this beautiful Aunty in 2023, I told her she needs to be an official storyteller because she had me engaged right from the moment I sat down with her. Her stories put me into a trance, like I was there at the place that she was yarning to me about…honestly I will never forget her 🥰🤗

•The great big whale got stuck•

‘We sing a song about the time that whale got stuck in the creek, just around from front beach, near Mili Point, at Nguiu just past the barge landing. It was long time ago. I was still a schoolgirl. It was a huge whale. Her big round back was filling up the creek. Maybe she took a wrong turn because she swam up the strait & into the full creek thinking maybe she would take some shelter or find food. Maybe she was already tired. She was stuck there when the tide went out & so the men went down with their harpoons & speared her. Then everyone was happy because we had a good feed for the whole community. Everyone shared, down at the front beach.’
