Multi-generational family shoots are honestly pure chaos 😅

There’s usually ...

one child refusing shoes
one dad asking “how long will this take?”
someone chasing toddlers through vineyards
Nan trying to feed everyone snacks from her purse
and at least one family member missing when we’re finally ready for the “quick whole family photo”

But somehow… it always comes together.

And truthfully, these have become some of my favourite sessions to photograph.

Because once you strip away the logistics and the chaos for a second, what’s left is something pretty special.

Four generations standing together.
Tiny hands holding older ones.
People laughing at the same jokes they’ve laughed at for 30 years.

The older I get, the more emotional these sessions make me, because these are the photos families end up treasuring most.

Not because they’re perfect.
But because everyone was there.

And being trusted to capture that ... the love, the noise, the personalities, the madness of it all .. is something I never take for granted.

My client folders?
Meticulously organised.
Backed up in triplicate.
Labelled within an inch of their life

My actual camera roll however… eekkk

Absolute chaos. * shh

20,000+ photos.
Screenshots I forgot existed.
Half-finished “content ideas.”
Random sunsets.
Photos of my kids basketball scores
Pictures of things I needed to remember from Bunnings.

Honestly, being a creative sometimes feels like having 5 million tabs open in your brain at once 😅

And somehow… it all makes sense to us.

Please tell me I’m not alone here…

How many photos are currently sitting in your camera roll?
(Share them so I feel less embarrassed about mine 😂)

A space designed to feel slow, intentional, grounded, and deeply aligned with the way I love to work.

Created with so much heart for the beautiful community that has supported me from the very beginning.

I’m getting very close to sharing it properly now… and honestly, I can’t wait.

There’s a running joke in photography that people think we just “click a button” all day 😅

And while technically… yes… there is a button involved… there’s also a whole world people don’t see behind the scenes.

The planning.
The problem solving.
The weather watching.
The editing.
The emotional energy.
The constant juggling of creative work and running a business at the same time.

Most photographers I know genuinely care deeply about their clients and the work they create. Probably more than people realise.

Which means we celebrate the wins hard… and yes, occasionally spiral when a memory card looks suspicious or a battery suddenly dies.

But despite all the madness of it , I still truly believe this is one of the best jobs in the world.

Because at the heart of it, we get to capture people, stories, milestones, businesses, families and all the little moments that matter.

And that’s a privilege I never take lightly.

Headshots seem to bring out the same fear in almost everyone…

“What do I do with my hands?” 😅

Closely followed by:
“I’m so awkward in photos.”

I promise, you are not the first person to say it to me.

A good headshot session shouldn’t feel stiff, intimidating, or like you’re auditioning for a corporate stock image library.

It should feel relaxed. Easy. Maybe even a little bit fun.

Over the years I’ve photographed everyone from solo business owners to full conference teams, and the best photos always happen once people stop trying so hard and just settle into themselves.

You don’t need to know how to pose.
You don’t need to practise your smile in the mirror beforehand.

Just turn up as you are.

I’ll guide the rest.

There’s something very different about these sessions.

They’re not rushed.
They’re not shared.
They’re not something squeezed into a busy day.

A sunset session is your own private pocket of time.

A quiet location.
The light softening around you.
Space to slow down, to be present, to just be together.

No distractions.
No pressure.
No need to perform.

Just an hour where everything else fades out for a little while.

And yes… you leave with photos.

But more than that, you leave with the feeling of it.

The stillness.
The connection.
The moment you don’t get to pause often enough.

It’s a simple experience.

But it’s a special one.

Over the years, I’ve worked with a wide range of teams, from small community groups through to large-scale events and organisations.

And one thing I’ve come to understand is this:

The success of any shoot rarely comes down to the camera, the equipment, or even the shot list.

It comes down to the relationship.

The way the conversation starts.
The level of trust.
The clarity around what really matters.

I recently shared some thoughts on this, particularly for teams, boards, and organisations looking to get the most out of working with a photographer.

Not just how to brief…
But how to create a collaboration that actually allows the work to be its best.

If you’re planning an event or working with a photographer this year, this might be a helpful read.
