The caption for my image is:
Dolerite is an igneous rock that is unusually widespread in Tasmania and so significantly shapes the landscape. It has been described as ‘the rock that makes Tasmania’. During the breakup of Gondwana, dolerite magma intruded into the crust as subsurface d***s and sills (sheets). As the magma cooled and crystallised, regular vertical cracks propagated through the sills, forming polygonal columns. The characteristic form of many dolerite cliff-lines is due to this. Less common is such a clear exposure of a cross-section of these columns seen here, forming a glaciated pavement on the Ben Lomond plateau, their outline highlighted by a light fall of snow.

NEW PHOTO BOOK BY CHRIS BELL
Chris Bell is amongst Tasmania’s best nature photographers and has been a friend for more than forty years. He has previously published five photo books, his first in 1980, all high quality productions and with a strong environmental message.

It is a pleasure to share the recent announcement of the imminent publication of Chris’ latest book, ‘Traces’. The book presents Chris’ finest images of detail in nature, a theme in which his work is pre-eminent. See here for more on the book (https://outsidethebox.org.au/projects/traces/).

Traces is available for pre-order now (see https://outsidethebox.org.au/shop/). All profits from the book will be used to support protection of Tasmania’s wild and endangered environments, so pre-purchasing the book will maximise the funds that can be used for such purposes.

The release of Traces will coincide with a major exhibition of Chris’s photographs at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Launceston, Tasmania from September 2025.

LAST WEEK - FORGOTTEN WILDERNESS PHOTO EXHIBITION

Showcasing the Spero-Wanderer region, my photo exhibition at Wild Island (Shop 8, 33 Salamanca Place, Hobart) is now in its last week so get along soon if you have yet to view it.

The Spero-Wanderer region is a large tract of wild country in western Tasmania that remains largely unprotected despite possessing similar natural and cultural values as those recognised in the adjacent Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Forgotten Wilderness – The Spero-Wanderer Region is an exhibition of archival photographic prints showcasing some of my work captured during 2022-2024 while undertaking a series of extended trips criss-crossing the remote area on foot and packraft. This tract of wild country in western Tasmania remains largely unprotected despite possessing similar natural and cultural values as those recognised in the adjacent Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

All welcome to join me and Alice Hardinge, Tasmanian campaign manager for the Wilderness Society Tasmania, at the official opening on Thursday 7 November, 5:30pm at Wild Island, Shop 8, 33 Salamanca Place, Hobart.

The latest issue of WILD magazine ( #193) features my photo article on Tasmania's Spero-Wanderer region, a "forgotten wilderness", illustrating its values and why it should be better protected by addition to the adjacent Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

WILD magazine has been supporting conservation issues for more than 40 years. If you want to view the full article, you can pick up a copy in many newsagents and outdoor stores nationwide.

An exhibition featuring a selection of my images of the Spero-Wanderer region will be on display at Wild Island, in Hobart, during November. More details of this next month.

Olegas' story has inspired many Tasmanian wilderness photographers who have followed. Max Angus' 1975 book of his work, bought by my parents in my early bushwalking days, was the first wilderness photography book I recall perusing and now occupies a special place in my book collection. This new exhibition at QVMAG in Launceston will be on display until February 2025.
