Beautiful candid moments rarely just happen on their own…
“Candid” is a big buzzword in family photography right now. But what does it actually mean?
When most people say they want candid photos, they’re usually talking about images that feel natural. Genuine laughter, real connection and moments that feel like them.
But here’s the thing…
Very few families know how to be “candid” in front of a camera (and they shouldn’t have to).
The best photos aren’t created by just standing back and hoping for magic.
They’re often sparked by a prompt, a game, a question or a little bit of guidance that helps genuine moments unfold naturally.
That’s why I like to arrive at sessions with a plan.
I start with a few photos of everyone looking at the camera and smiling, because they’re often the images that end up on the wall.
But once we’ve got those, the pressure is gone and everyone (parents) can relax.
That’s when the laughter, connection and beautifully imperfect moments tend to happen.
For me, it’s never been about choosing between posed or candid. It’s about creating a gallery that gives your family both.
Because one day you’ll treasure the photo where everyone is laughing…
And the one where everyone is looking at the camera smiling.
