Glowing Guardians: Protecting Fluorescent Marsupials
This photograph shows a dead Eastern Barred Bandicoot (Perameles gunnii gunnii), a vulnerable marsupial species with a remarkable but lesser-known trait: UV-induced visible fluorescence. Under UV light, these marsupials absorb ultraviolet radiation and re-emit it as visible light. This unique phenomenon underscores the urgent need for road safety measures to prevent roadkill and protect these glowing creatures. Many marsupials exhibit this hidden fluorescence, emphasising their ecological significance and the critical need to safeguard their habitats from human threats.
If this photograph becomes a finalist, it will be exhibited at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, during Beaker Street Festival 2024.
