I'm looking for more local couples to become part of my Still Holding Hands project - and I would love for you to help me find them.

It might be your grandparents, your parents, your neighbours or a couple you've always admired - it may even be you.

Still Holding Hands is about celebrating enduring love that has grown over a lifetime, documenting some memories and words of wisdom over a cuppa, then casually taking some beautiful portraits to commemorate.

There is no reason to dress up or get fancy, we do authentic, casual and it's totally free. The couple receive their photos to keep (and would need to be okay with them being online also)

If you have had someone come to mind while reading this, or even when you have read any of my Still Holding Hands stories, please tag them or reach out to me via DM or email (just put the subject as Still Holding Hands) and feel free to share 😊

Grandson 💙

Still never tires of me pointing the camera at him.
On the weekend as I was taking photos of him playing with his little golf set, he asked me "Gaga, do you have my camera?"

"His" camera is an old film camera we discovered actually worked one day when I had taken it along to their photoshoot.

As I gave it to him, he handed me his golf club and proceeded to kneel down in the exact same spot I was, signalling to me where I was to stand. My heart honestly melted 🥹🥹

Now we just have to teach you to take your little fingers off the lens 😆

My eyes were always on the sky long before I even knew how to take my camera off auto.

It's where I fell in love with photography, years before I realised that I saw that same beauty, those same details, that same warmth and sparkle that our beautiful outdoors holds, in the people around me.

One day I decided that I could indeed have both, and Sunlight & Dust was born.

And now, coming up to one year of living here on the stunning Yorke Peninsula, my creative little soul is just getting started ✨️

Karyn & Kevin - Part 3 (of 3)

I ask Kevin what is his favourite thing about Karyn? He instantly responds with “Her smile.” But then follows up with “It’s much more than that. She is very understanding and supportive. Always forward with her thoughts and not afraid to ask questions. She’s just great.”

I ask Karyn the same thing about Kevin. “He is caring, compassionate – and we call him “Dr Dad”, no matter what it is, he always knows – and he has even been asked if he has had medical training by doctors due to how well he can bandage.”

What has love taught you?
Kevin: “Respect”
Karyn: “Patience”

At this point, Hannah pipes in with “Their understanding of each other. Sometimes they just look at each other, and you can tell their eyes are talking to each other, and I have no idea what is going on!”

So, who is the better cook?
They agree they are both pretty equal, but Karyn is known for her pavlova and cream puffs while Kevin is known for his sausage rolls and “creative cooking”.
Hannah laughs “He just adds vegemite and paprika to everything.”

Secret to a long successful marriage?
Kevin: “Understanding, don’t try to change them.”
Karyn: “Doing things together but have your separate things too.”

When someone looks at your photos in the future, what do you think they’ll see?
Kevin jumps in with “Grumpy old bastard.” But of course, he is laughing.
Karyn: “A couple, still in love after 33 years of marriage.”

Now, as is standard for “Still Holding Hands”, I ask them to describe each other in 3 words.
Kevin: “Loving, caring, affectionate.”
Karyn: “After what we have been through over the past 12 months, there are only two words, he is ‘My Rock’.”

Kevin: “We have learnt to make the most of what we’ve got. You have to love and cherish what you’ve got. We thrive on just waking up and hearing the birds.”

Lastly, I ask if there is anything they would change.
Both answer exactly the same way.
"Not a thing."

Karyn & Kevin - Part 2 (of 3)

It’s hard for me to describe, but, watching them, and Karyn really does have this huge, beautiful, genuine smile, it's clear in the way Kevin says it as he looks at her, that in those stressful times, that smile and her positive nature would have made all the difference.

Adding to those tough conditions, it would take 11 years and multiple IVF attempts, and then the sale of the dairy farm, for Karyn to finally fall pregnant with their gorgeous daughter Hannah. Talking of how heartbreaking it was to go through that, Karyn simply says “We didn’t share it with anyone.”

Karyn decides that after waiting so long for her daughter to arrive, she will be a stay-at-home-Mum.

That turned out to be short lived as Kevin leaves behind his position on a cattle station and they buy a lawnmower shop.
“Smithton Mowers Forest & Garden” is given a new lease on life and becomes very popular and Karyn soon becomes a fulltime bookkeeper.

Unfortunately, Kevin then encounters some very serious health issues due to the chemicals he was working with and due to those health reasons, they sell the lawnmower shop after 5 years.

Kevin “I had pneumonia a couple of times, was hospitalised multiple times and had to have my oesophagus rebuilt. My health kicked me up the butt and made me realise that my life may not be as long as I had once thought.”

In fact, the doctor had advised Kevin that if he didn’t relocate to a warmer climate without frost that it may be a lot shorter than anticipated. After some research, they came over to Yorke Peninsula, looked around for where to settle. Kevin once again ended up in hospital and while he was in there, Karyn walked in and advised him she had bought a house!

These two have been through some very tough times throughout their marriage, but the last 12 months have been incredibly challenging. Yet, their smiles, sense of humour and love for the simple things in life have not faltered.

“We have no interest in repeating 2025.” Karyn tells me. “Our appreciation for life changed.”

Karyn & Kevin – Part 1 (of 3)

I honestly could have pinched myself when these two tell me their romance started over breeding rabbits, and I mean not just any rabbits, those huge Flemish rabbits. Karyn, a successful breeder and seller of her girls, Kevin brings over his lucky guy “Rambo” and… well, here we are after more than 33 years of marriage!

They explain that they’d had mutual friends for about 5 years, and they bonded over their common thoughts and interests – rabbits, of course, and gardening.

When I ask about their proposal story, Karyn starts to laugh, “It was Valentine’s Day of a leap year, so I knew that the girl could be the one to ask.” Clearly my expression was one of excitement when I looked at her, as she quickly continues “It gets worse.” She says, “He thought I was joking.” (Even though she later tells me she had even presented him with a rose from her own garden at the time.)

So oblivious was Kevin, in fact, that he brought up the subject of marriage with her a few months later and she told him she had already asked him months earlier. Kevin shrugs and says, “I was just happy to know we were on the same way of thinking.”

They were married in the Uniting Church at Smithton in 1993 and Karyn mentions that the students from the primary school where she was working at the time, all lined up waiting outside to see her. You can tell it meant a great deal to her. Their wedding reception was the first event to be held at the Senior Citizens Centre, and they honeymooned in Cairns.

Prior to getting married they had each lived independently, they then moved as newlyweds onto the dairy farm they had purchased from Karyn’s parents. Kevin confirms he had little knowledge of dairy farming, but they ended up purchasing the whole 640 acres. “It was really, really hard work, very long hours, really stressful and financially very hard.” Then he adds “But we loved it.”

He laughs as he recalls hearing Karyn in the mornings, happily talking to all the cows, (they all had names) as she went about her morning chores.

There are some sessions that will stay with you long after the camera has been put away.

This is one of them.

Photographs can't stop time but they can help us to hold onto the people we love.
