After much reflection, I’ve decided to take a step back from the business side of photography for a little while. Over the past few years, I’ve poured my heart into building something I’m incredibly proud of — turning a passion into a profession. But somewhere along the way, I lost touch with the reason I fell in love with photography in the first place: the joy of creating just for me.

In chasing deadlines, bookings, and business goals, I’ve unintentionally silenced my own need for creative expression. I’ve missed the freedom of shooting without a purpose, without pressure — just following the light, a feeling, or a fleeting moment.

So now, I’m choosing to give myself the space to grow, to explore, and to create again — not for clients, but for myself. This isn’t goodbye, just a pause to reconnect with the artist in me. Thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement, and understanding. I can’t wait to return with a fresh perspective and a full heart.

I don’t even know where to start when it comes to Kurt. He’s the kind of person who makes the world feel a little less heavy just by being in it. With him, I feel safe — truly safe — in a way I never even realized I needed. His kindness, his strength, and the way he quietly shows up for me every single day mean more than words can say. Kurt is an amazing guy, and I’m so grateful I get to call him my partner. Life feels a whole lot better with him by my side.

Happy Birthday!

WELCOME ABOARD

I've gained some new followers recently, so I thought it was time for a re-introduction.

Hi, I’m Tamika — the heart, soul, and shutter behind Tamika Petersen Photography! My love for photography sparked years ago in the glow of a darkroom, and ever since, I’ve been chasing light, laughter, and all the real, messy, magical moments that make life beautiful.

I’m not just about taking photos — I’m about telling stories. Whether I’m capturing a family's candid giggles, a business’s bold new look, or the electric buzz of a public event, I’m all about creating images that feel alive and authentic. My style? Adaptable, creative, and a little adventurous — just like life itself!

When I’m not behind the lens, you’ll find me chasing sunsets, getting my boots and camera dirty on a bushwalk with my partner Kurt, or hanging out with my mischievous (and very photogenic) dog, Willow.

If you're ever in Ballarat, you have to visit the Cordwainer — a true master of his craft!
With decades of experience, Jess breathes new life into beloved leather goods. Along with wife Krys and daughter Quince, the workshop is a little slice of history, filled with the rich scent of leather and the steady rhythm of craftsmanship you don't often find these days.

There's something truly special about watching a craftsman at work — the focus, the patience, the skill built through years of dedication. Every movement is purposeful, every detail matters. It's a reminder that true craftsmanship isn't rushed — it's an art form, a labor of love.

Today I got to witness that magic firsthand, and it left me feeling inspired to slow down and appreciate the beauty in the process, not just the finished piece.

Today, we pause to honour the ANZAC spirit — courage, mateship, sacrifice, and resilience.
We remember those who served, those who fell, and those who still carry the weight of war.
Lest we forget.

Boyhood

It’s scraped knees and wild imaginations.
Lego castles, muddy shoes, and dreams that stretch farther than the sky.
It’s loud laughs, quiet questions, and moments that shape who they’ll become.
There’s magic in the mess, beauty in the chaos, and wonder in the way they see the world.
Let them be little. Let them explore. Let them grow.

Two hearts that beat with laughter shared,
In whispered dreams and secrets bared.
Through childhood games and grown-up fears,
They stand as one through all the years.

A bond not broken, fierce and true,
No storm can dim the light they knew.
In every smile and every fight,
Sisters make the world feel right.

Laughter echoes through the air,
Feet are flying everywhere,
Tiny hands and messy hair—
Joy like sunshine, bright and bare.

Hopscotch chalk on pavement grey,
Imagined worlds in midday play,
Dragons chased and castles made,
In cardboard forts that never fade.

Voices rising, high and sweet,
Pattering like a drumbeat fleet,
Hide and seek, then tag again,
The sky a roof, the breeze a friend.

Grass-stained knees and dirty shoes,
Time a thing they never lose,
In every giggle, every cheer—
A universe of wonder near.

Let them run, let stories grow,
In puddles deep and moonlight glow,
For childhood’s magic, wild and free,
Is where the soul learns how to be.

Roots and Wings

In the quiet hush of morning light,
Family stands, a steadfast sight.
Roots that anchor, strong and deep,
Holding stories we still keep.

Laughter echoing down the hall,
Photos hanging on every wall.
Hands that hold through joy and pain,
Shelter from the fiercest rain.

Shared meals, old jokes, and knowing eyes,
A place where every heart can rise.
Though we wander, though we roam,
Family is our first true home.

Not always perfect, but always near,
In every triumph, every tear.
They give us wings, yet let us stray,
And welcome us home anyway.

So here’s to bonds no time can sever—
In our hearts, they live forever.

Supporting locals, who support locals.

There's a special joy in seeing my photography bring life and character to local businesses.

I've been navigating some pretty significant life changes over the past year and have noticed my support needs have increased during this period and my capacity* for additional sources of uncertainty and unsafety have reduced.

Despite all I know cognitively and have learned in my role as a counsellor and educator, I still notice the ways in which the Inner Critic judges me in these moments, when I not only would never judge but actively support and guide others to tend to their mental, emotional, sensory and physical needs if they were ever in a similar situation.

And whilst I know the Inner Critic's intention is to protect me, sometimes it's helpful to have a more grounded, adult, supportive belief on hand to calm the tide of self judgement in times of need.

This has inspired me to create the You Deserve Good Support series that I hope can serve as an anchor for anyone, neurodivergent or not, who finds judgement creeping in when seeking support

Take good care.
